I live the south of England and I would really like to surprise DP with some scotch pies but I don't know which ones are good to get. The ones we get in Morrisons are Bells (I think) and apparently not good. I can order online but is there a brand I should go with over the others. There are loads to choose from.

If you look at Randall's online butcher they deliver all over the UK they are local to me their scotch pies are delicious a bit pricier , but for "every day" I like Bells .

Not Bells, Halls pies sorry

Yep Halls pies here too, Randall’s are nice but expensive and really a scotch pie isn’t a luxury item so there comes a point when the expense doesn’t result in a better product.

Thank you. I'm just looking at Halls. I have to ask. What's a beef olive?

It’s sausage wrapped in thin frying steak - and delicious if you like steak.

Sounds so good!

Beef olives in the slow cooker... perfect autumn dinner! My mum did them in the summer when the weather was awful and we got soaked walking on the beach. Came home to beef olives in gravy with mash and veg and a bottle of red wine!

Definitely Halls pies!

We love a slow cooked beef olive here too.

And other Scottish butchery treats such as Charles Macleod's Stornoway black pudding (used to live in stornoway!) and Macsween's haggis.

ScotchPies · 22/10/2023 17:54

How would you cook them in the slow cooker? In liquid or just on a low heat on their own ? I'm making an order 😁

A beef olive can be thin steak rolled with a white pudding filling. Braise in oven.

Cook them like a stew with beef stock/gravy
