I’m after a bookcase like this one
books are taking over my house!
but not costing 1300 quid
I can’t find any - they are all narrow or high.
needs to be around 140cm long
where should I look??

Thanks very much I’ll look at that.
I need a wooden one however, there’s a lot of the IKEA type which wouldn’t suit

Is it worth asking a joiner to make one?
I really don’t know how much they’d charge, so it might be a non-starter!

Edited to add: it could be made out of fairly cheap pine planks and then you could stain it or paint it yourself.

What price point do you want it at? If it’s solid wood it’s always going to be more expensive than flat pack - have you tried e.g. Cotswold Company or Oak Furnitureland or similar?

You might find more success with 2x 70cm -wide bookcases than one long unit?

have a look at the sale room for auctions. I bought a lovely book case from there, needed a bit of love but it's gorgeous now. you can always take it to an antique restorer for a freshen up. many that look exactly like this are available.

Wayfair usually has quite a good selection in different sizes and quality. Otherwise I second going for two next to each other, or three, or four, depending on the number of books!

Hi,

I also have a bookcase-related question.
We have a self-contained annexe attached to our house, and as a part of house renovation, we've just opened a new doorway to the annexe that we'd like to hide through a secret bookcase door that can hold books rather than a faux set of books.

I'm having trouble finding a carpenter in London who can do that and who will show me examples of previous similar jobs.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Sam. X

I never did find a bookcase snd it’s just been left.
i was surprised to see this thread pop up after all the time had passed.
Your quest is so much more exciting than mine - a secret doorway!!! How beautiful 🤩
