Are heated blankets safe?

Going to struggle with the gas bill this year I think.

Youngest child is 12.

Are they safe to use really?

i put mine on high 30 mins before I go to bed then turn it off when I get in. Although on my instructions it does say I can sleep with it on but I get to sweaty!
