Talk to me about fondue sets….

Thinking for a family evening over Christmas. My teens love ‘retro’!

What type of bowl is best - metal? enamel ‘Le Creuset’ style?

What is the best way of keeping the cheese mix warm? - the burner thingy…and stand…

I know this is likely to be a purchase that we use….once!😆

Thanks!

I’ve never done a cheese fondue. Did a chocolate fondue for a party once. Chocolate, cream, some syrup. Melted in a Pyrex bowl over a Bain Marie and kept warm on a heated tray gadget.

QVC have a cooks essentials fondue (600ml) for under £15. I keep looking at it and convincing myself I’d never use it

Cheese fondue is generally done in a ceramic bowl. The iron ones are usually used for oil or broth based ones.

If you have a Pyrex casserole dish, that would be perfect.

I love our fondue , we got ours from Procook and it gets used much more than I thought it would. Hassleback mini potatoes are the absolute best dipper.

If you are worried you won’t use a fondue set much maybe consider getting a raclette set instead. They are also fun and retro but perhaps a little more versatile.

Cast iron on a stand with tea lights under is the easiest arrangement. Stalk your local charity shops, have a word with staff in them - they are frequently donated here

We do it 2-3 times a year, it's fun

Thank you for helping me.

@Fourlegsandatail, yes I saw a fondue set, kind of sitting on a raclette. Now more to think about.

Hoping for something ‘shared’, eating together. I'm assuming no ‘double dipping’.😆

I have cast iron because that was what was available. I've only ever done cheese fondue and it has always worked very well. I'm using it with the meths burner but I'm going to get some gel to see how that goes.

It does work. I just find the ceramic easier to clean.

Off to dig mine out now.
