Tipping query!

Would you tip on a meal in a restaurant where you’ve been sat by a host and told to order on the app, then had your food brought over by a food runner?

If you do, would you tip in the same way as a restaurant that offered traditional service?

No I wouldn't

Sisterpita · 21/10/2023 11:57

I would try and give the food runner the tip.

CornishGem1975 · 21/10/2023 11:59

Nope, but I don't tip anymore anyway.

CornishGem1975 · 21/10/2023 12:00

(Also my DD worked as a food runner and food runners didn't even get a share of the tips, only the waitresses got the tips)

cocksstrideintheevening · 21/10/2023 12:04

No.

InspectorGidget · 21/10/2023 12:11

No I wouldn't.

I am a mystery diner and I always impress in my reports the staff must be missing out on tips.

I hate having my phone out at the table to order. They may as well have the screens like in McDonald's.

Maybe, but certainly not as much.

I've never heard the term "food runner", but in this situation what's the difference to a waiter/ress?

pizzaHeart · 21/10/2023 12:15

I would round a bit e.g for £18.75 - I would pay £20 but might pay £19 for £18.25 depending on food and prices in general. But I hate tipping tbh

I've never heard of it either, and would have assumed until I read the OP that the person who brings my food is a waiter/ress. How do I tell the difference?

CornishGem1975 · 21/10/2023 12:28

@Chasingsquirrels @RichardMarxisinnocent

You'd notice the difference...the waitress/waiter is the person to take your order. If someone else delivers your food then they're a runner. They don't do much more than deliver food from kitchen to table.

YireosDodeAver · 21/10/2023 12:34

I don't tip if ordering is via an app generally. I would make an exception if we were a large group and the table would take a while to clean up. There's barely any service.

ClandestineAdulation · 21/10/2023 14:46

Thanks, this is my thought for the majority! I always feel that I should tip in a restaurant but when you order on an app and pay upfront and get asked to tip there and then, how are you supposed know if you’re getting any service at all, let alone service worth paying for!

This place also didn’t take any cash, so unsure if they could have processed any cash tips…
