Escape to the Country annoyances.

Why is there a new part where they show them standing on their doorstep chatting like a couple of vagrants?

Why when they show an elderly couple a kitchen or living room that you could host a barn dance in, do they say that it's much too small? What are these people doing in their kitchens that requires so much space?

And why, when they say that they want a 3 bedroom home with no stairs and a small garden, do they show them Chatsworth House?

I've got the same gripes as everyone else. For Place in the Sun type programmes, filming when there's never anyone else around and not giving an idea of monthly or annual service costs. Less so with Escape to the Country, but as well as the obvious things that've been pointed out it's the lack of context. It's underwhelming when the viewers say we're going to scope out the area more but of course they should.

What really gets my goat the worst is that presumably in the pre show interviews they mention a grandchild or a large item like a piano, dining table or specific free standing fridge and then that gets dragged into every bit of subsequent conversation. I bet they so regret saying anything. If you found an otherwise perfect home then you could easily swap the dining table or rent storage for the collection of 23 motorbikes. I always focus on what Kirsty Allsop once said to people who wanted extra bedrooms to accommodate visitors 'You don't buy a home for other people' you should choose a home based on using most of the space, most of the time, unless your pockets are super deep.

All that said and despite being quite private myself, I still watch because I do love a good old nosy around other people's homes 😊

People's obsession with the mysterious 'wow factor'.

"It ticks all our boxes on the inside but the outside doesn't have enough wow factor."

Hmm I'm sure wanting to make 'so-called' friends and family jealous is a very sensible reason for wanting to up sticks and move house. 💩

The mysterious" wow factor" is just a way of saying "We don't like this house".

Well no, we have a lift direct to our front door. It’s a penthouse with a large terrace and a balcony. These things exist 😁
Indeed they do but in many cities they are more expensive than large family houses and attract hefty service charges - am nosey about which city? 😊

Will you build some sort of catio or are the "sides" too high for them to jump? I think I'd have paranoia about them gaily leaping over the sides.

Central belt, Scotland. Yep. Enclosed catio on the balcony (11ft by 5, 8ft high with walkways, a tree, ladders, etc) and on the terrace cat proofing, the roley poles on the hand rails (can’t remember what they’re called) so they can’t get a grip if they try to jump up. Our eldest was the main worry as he’s adventurous but he’s knocking on now, will be 11 then and getting hefty 😁 he’s becoming less of a roamer in the family home. The girls don’t go out much anyway, through choice. They’re more lap cats. We’ve no concerns. I would have rejected it if I had !

That's quite cool really - cats with their very own penthouse suite, just as it should be. 😁

Watched an episode yesterday from the Pitlochry area.
The couple (as per) were walking through an old property and they stopped beside a small window to comment on the thickness of the walls.
So far so gripping.
The woman says "oh I could see myself sitting there reading a book..."
What?
You would contort your adult frame into a 1-ft sq. windowsill when the house has 10 other rooms?
Later, they are admiring the large patio and husband remarks, very originally, "oh I can see myself out there with a morning coffee"..
Yeah right, while wifey deals with the 2 semi-feral children.

I haven’t read the whole thread so sorry if this is a repeat, I hate the (usually fake) crying!! The “oh sorry it’s making me quite emotional” dabbing at eyes etc..
You’re not rehearsing for a Hollywood film ffs!

That's reminded me of another one: "I'm lost for words... that's a first. Hahaha." 🙄

doesnow · 09/11/2023 01:31

They never buy the houses. Not that I've ever seen. It's all window shopping.

Passepartoute · 09/11/2023 07:27

I've seen quite a few where they do buy the house. Oddly enough, I was just watching one the other day which went against a few of the tropes on this thread - not a mansion, not a house in the south-west, and they bought it.

doesnow · 09/11/2023 11:33

I've never seen an actual sale, they must be very uncommon. The most progress I've heard, in the blurb at the end of the programme, is that they intend to take a second viewing and/or further explore the local area.

doesnow · 09/11/2023 11:37

That's essentially every programme summed up @Labtastic 😀
