Have you ever been on a quiz show?

Thread prompted by one running on AIBU.

I love quiz shows. DD and I especially love “Lingo” but I’m an English teacher so if I was kicked off first, I would have to live in a cave.

Has anyone ever been on one or know someone who has? What’s it like? Did you win big?!

Yes! Twice!

'Mastermind' back in 1990, when I was but a callow youth of 25, and in the good old days when Magnus Magnusson was the interogator. Came 4th - but 2nd in the dress rehearsal. Lost my nerve and entered what was referred to as the 'pass spiral' when it came to the actual recording.

'Eggheads' in 2010 - playing for £12000, nearly won, deserved to win, we took the Eggheads to 4 'sudden death' questions in the final round, but that was edited out when it finally aired!

I bet “Mastermind” was intense!

I am definitely not knowledgeable enough for quiz shows like that. I did want to go on “Going for Gold” back in the day. That was a treat when I was off school poorly.

I would love to press the button on the “Tipping Point” machine. Is it really like a giant 2 penny machine?!

I was on a R4 quiz for gardeners and, although I came second in that first round and was knocked out, it was great fun. I'd worked very hard beforehand so wasn't nervous, just rather over-excited, which turns me into a complete clown. I got some good laughs from the audience but they were all edited out. There were about 150 in the audience, including friends and family and it was good to have them there. Before we started, the temptation of the buzzer got too much for me so I pressed it and the 'NEEE! was really loud 😅 OH said afterwards, 'I knew that was you'.

I was on bbc one called "beat the pack" around ten years ago!

It was lots of fun! Although the bbc wouldn't allow me to wear my false eyelashes so I was cross about that!

Would definitely recommend though! Loved the experience!

Mammyloveswine · 21/10/2023 10:14

I didn't win anything tho!

I've had auditions for The Chase and The 1% Club but unfortunately Slt at work at the time wouldn't allow me to go to The Chase audition😡Sadly, I was unwell for The 1% Club. My brother and I auditioned for Can't Cook, Won't Cook about 30 years ago! I will definitely get on a quiz show one day!

MrsMurphyIWish · 21/10/2023 10:35

I’m loving the stories!

@Bbq1 Another reason why SLTs are arses 😆 Don’t think I could hold my nerve on “The Chase”. I defo would have won “Catchphrase” with Roy Walker. It’s unfair now. I remember one episode when a contestant buzzed in and said “money laundering” for a washing machine with money inside. Not the answer. The money was “laundering money”. How is that different?! Mr Chips is a bastard since he became computer generated.

Odd about the eyelashes @Mammyloveswine. Maybe they would look “odd” on camera or were you wearing massive ones where the answers could be concealed inside?

You're not wrong @MrsMurphyIWish! What made it worse was that a guy in work got an audition for the same show about 2 years ago and was allowed to go by the ht! I was pretty upset at the time. He had the audition but obviously didn't get any further as it's never been mentioned again.
