Or do you flat-share? Live with parents ? Live in temporary accommodation etc

I live with my small children in a big studio flat in London. Plan to move out in the foreseeable future as the kids will need more room. But for now it works.

What is your living situation like?

Be as honest as you like !

Private rent a one bedroom with two children in London. We’re close to being housed in a Council/HA property which will be a two bed

EmeraldTheSeahorse · 21/10/2023 01:06

Council house in london. Would love to move but it's a rough area so people don't want to live here. Considering going private.

IneedAyoniN · 21/10/2023 01:30

Private rent. Me and 2 dc. Can't afford to move. House is in terrible condition but landlord makes constant excuses about why he can't do the work. He knows I can't afford to move anywhere else so has me over a barrell.

Oyen · 21/10/2023 01:32

What about you OP? Do you own/rent/squat/whatever?

Being honest...
I live rent free in a house. I can't claim HB as it is classed as contrived tenancy.

mrsg2019 · 21/10/2023 01:38

We own our house with no mortgage - we live in Australia. I grew up in a council house in a rough area in the U.K. and I count my blessings every day.

hawrone · 21/10/2023 01:40

I rent a 2 bed flat from the council. I've lived here for 20 years and I'm planning to buy it next year. I'm a single parent with one dc so it meets our needs, though we have no outdoor space and it could always be bigger. Location is great though - 7 min walk to a zone 1 tube.

I live in a mortgaged house. Really low one

Council house, just a small row of 6 semi detached houses (2 now privately owned) on the outskirts of a leafy village. I consider myself very lucky

Tarkan · 21/10/2023 03:37

We rent privately but in an area that's mostly still council owned. Our rent is cheaper than some nearby council houses though and not very much higher than the council rent on same sized places in the next street, but we have the addition of a much bigger garden, a gated one car driveway as well as better on-road parking, and a converted loft that they don't have. We have a great landlord and he's dealt with a few issues we've had since we moved in without our rent going up in the last few years either. We've been incredibly lucky to have this in the private rental market.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/10/2023 04:27

Mortgaged tiny two bed terrace. 15 min walk from work. And in an ok student area.

burntoutnurse · 21/10/2023 04:27

Until last year I lived in a private rental. With my 3 dc and dog. 4 bed house

Now I'm with DP. We own our 3 bed house outright, no mortgage. 2dc left at home and ddog,

House was inherited. We rent out DP's owned outright 3 bed below market price because we know the guy is a decent guy and looks after the place well.

Shallysally · 21/10/2023 04:47

Mortgage on a three bed money trap. I do love the house though so will be worth the spend when it’s finished.

45 minute commute so fairly manageable.

givemeasunnyday · 21/10/2023 04:57

I privately rent a two bedroom flat in New Zealand. Just me and one cat (four months ago there were three cats) 😢I'm a ten minute walk from town, and the rent is cheaper than anything I've seen advertised lately. Good landlords, I've been here 18 months and have never had a flat inspection. I have owned in the past but won't again unless I win money, and I object to the ridiculous prices anyway.

Jethia · 21/10/2023 05:00

Live in a house we own. Mortgage all paid off. Only 1 DC left at home full time

Overthebow · 21/10/2023 05:02

We own, with large mortgage, a 4 bed house that I live in with DH and 2 DC.

Devilsmommy · 21/10/2023 05:17

Rent a 2 bed flat HA in a semi rural village. Couldn't believe our luck with the cheap rent in a village with expensive houses. Council tax is a killer though so swings and roundabouts 😉

ohfook · 21/10/2023 07:13

Have a mortgage on a nice house in a not great area. Ideally I would pick up my house and put it in the area I used to live but obviously that's not possible.

Houses are quite cheap where we live but we still struggled to save a deposit so our first house was a staircasing scheme - no deposit each monthly payment is 50% rent and 50% buying shares in the equity of the house. It was a tiny house, but it increased in value to the point where we'd made £25k when we sold four years later which was our deposit/solicitors fees etc for this house.

It was an amazing scheme which helped us and lots of other families in our area. It should be much more widespread imo. Obviously I know nothing about business though as they tried to expand into London (with great fanfare) and then not longer after that the scheme folded; keeping running for existing families on it but not adding any more properties to the roster.

Mortgage free 4 bed house

StopLickingTheDog · 21/10/2023 07:48

Rent a 3 bedroom end of terrace, housing association. Its an inherited tenancy and we're grateful every single day for having an affordable roof over our heads in a safe albeit run down town with good schools.

SaracensMavericks · 21/10/2023 07:51

DH and I own a mortgaged 5 bed property and live in it with our three teenagers.

BlueKaftan · 21/10/2023 07:52

Own a Two up two down Victorian terrace house in a nice area. Schools, churches, pubs, all within walking distance.

KylieKangaroo · 21/10/2023 07:54

Shared ownership 3 bed house

Hellokittymania · 21/10/2023 07:58

I became a homeowner back in March, the place is a two bedroom apartment with a large terrace, but I am visually impaired and living in Greece, so my home was also supposed to be for activities like roller skating and riding my bike on my terrace. I’m a very active person, and a lot of these things just wouldn’t be feasible unless I have a paid somebody to go out with me , so in that sense is good. I can also do gymnastics and flip around on the balcony, the balcony is very very big.

The downside is that we had two big floods, last month, three weeks apart, which caused a huge amount of damage to many many homes, including my building, and I’m not sure what will happen within the next few months, how much mold damage there will be, etc.

on a good day, I like the place, on a bad day, I want to leave, today is an in between day, or I’m not sure what I want to do, but I’m trying to find a solution.
