Do you rent from LA,HA or rent privately or do you own your property?

Or do you flat-share? Live with parents ? Live in temporary accommodation etc

I live with my small children in a big studio flat in London. Plan to move out in the foreseeable future as the kids will need more room. But for now it works.

What is your living situation like?

Be as honest as you like !

We're mortgage free retired couple. We own and live in a 4 bed detached. Been here over 20 years but would love to downsize to a 2 bed bungalow due to DHs health and mobility issues. Can't see it happening anytime soon as properties of the type we would need are rarer than hen's teeth and very expensive in this area.

Tumbleweed101 · 21/10/2023 08:09

Three bed semi with three of my children (my ex and my adult son lived here at one time too). Rent from the HA. Fairly rural, on edge of a village. Good size gardens and a beautiful view over the fields. Rent is reasonable and manageable on my single wage. I’d need help via housing benefits if it was much higher.

Very lucky to have been offered this house 19yrs ago when we were made homeless by a private landlord selling the house from under us. All turned out for the best though.

HashBrownandBeans · 21/10/2023 08:10

Private rent a 4 bed link detached home at the very edge of a market town so feels quite rural. Been here 12 years. Our landlords are selling in 4 years time. Got no chance of ever buying it, mortgage is too much for us.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 21/10/2023 08:11

Own home with a mortgage.
3 bed semi . 4 adults 1 teen . Somehow it just about works .
My eldest boys dont have the money to get their own places anytime soon
Zone 6 london

Petaldust · 21/10/2023 08:16

Zone 1 London 2 bed Council flat. Rent is cheap and space is large. In some ways I feel really lucky but on the other hand I’m stressed about what happens when I retire.

Mumoftwotoddlers · 21/10/2023 08:17

Private rent, 4 bedroom house

Zebedee55 · 21/10/2023 08:25

HA 2 bed property in a lovely London suburb. Paying full rent - these places are above normal social housing rent (higher spec), but still below what a private rental would be in this area.

Houses prices are uber expensive around here.

Simonjt · 21/10/2023 08:26

We live in a house we own, it was given to my husband by his fraternal grandparents when he turned 18, we are incredibly lucky. Here (Sweden) 1 in 7 people live in what we in the UK would call council/HA housing, which accounts for half of all rental homes in the country. We do however have a similar housing shortage to the UK, as in we have enough homes, but people are increasingly wanting to live in larger cities and towns.

Our house is a detached, traditional wooden clad home, it has four bedrooms, like many properties here it has a full height sealed basement with windows, so we’ve turned this into an airbnb/place our own visitors can stay in.

Livedandlearned · 21/10/2023 09:38

Own a 3 bed semi, one dc here, 2 grown up and moved out.

30 minute commute.

AyeOopDuck · 21/10/2023 09:55

We own outright and have since we were mid thirties, we did some risky investing about 18 years ago. It could have gone either way and we could have lost thousands but it paid off. Because of that reason our whole life has been far better financially than it would have been.

DH, myself and DS live in a 3 bed semi, he is moving out next year and we will be able to help him when the time comes with a generous deposit.

EnterNowhere · 21/10/2023 10:36

I live with my partner and our 3 year old daughter, we own a 3 bed house with mortgage which we bought new 4 years ago. It's small by a lot of people's standards, as a lot of new builds are, but does the 3 of us fine and we are in a great area with good schools etc.

I have a 6 min commute to work also, my partner is a bit longer prob 20-25 mins. Neither of us have jobs where it is possible to WFH so the commute is a big thing.

J316 · 21/10/2023 11:17

Housing association 2 bed flat in Argyll. Lived here 20 years and brought up my 2 children here. Paid my very low rent until a few years ago, I’m now disabled so my rent is paid for me. I’m very grateful for how fortunate I am.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 21/10/2023 11:20

semi detached, 3 bed HA property in a village, feel very lucky to have it and am very settled

Timeforchangeithink · 21/10/2023 11:24

Ex LA semi, 2 beds, corner plot, owned outright (due to inheritance). Would love to move to a detached but would need a mortgage but live being mortgage free.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 21/10/2023 11:27

Private rent 4 bed house on a lovely estate. Been here 7 years.

Very, very fortunate to have a great landlord and be paying (now) well under the odds for the going market value.

EmpressSoleil · 21/10/2023 11:28

I’m with a HA, live in a 4 bed Victorian conversion. So there’s a 2 bed flat on the ground floor and mine is 2nd and 3rd floors, plus a half floor at the back. I was very lucky to get this. I exchanged into it with 2 DC but at the time the HA it was under allowed you to have 1 bedroom more than you needed, if it was an exchange. That would never happen now! The people I swapped with wanted RTB on a more affordable property.

No way could I ever have afforded to buy this in the area it’s in so I feel very lucky. I did do about 7 exchanges though from when I got my first property so it was a long road! Rent is reasonable as I’ve been a tenant for so long and they’re limited on how much they’re allowed to raise it each year. I believe newer tenancies are more expensive.

I’m in London near a tube station so can get around easily. It’s pretty perfect for me. I also love old houses and hate new builds so getting a victorian house was exactly what I wanted.

hettiethehare · 21/10/2023 11:31

4 bed terrace in Inner London - we own with the help of a large mortgage. 3 DC - we moved relatively recently so they could each have a bedroom. House needs work but cost of living means we aren't really saving to get that work done!

FlyingSoap · 21/10/2023 11:32

HA two bed new build house with lovely garden in nice area. It’s tiny but we’re lucky and going to stay as long as we can.

Thighdentitycrisis · 21/10/2023 11:40

@Petaldust
similar to you. Can’t afford to buy even with max discount. can’t afford to buy elsewhere at my advanced age. I’m thinking about sharing my flat with a carer/companion in my old age

avocadotofu · 21/10/2023 11:42

We own a 2 bedroom flat (mortgaged) in London zone 3. It works for us for now as it's only us and DS5.

aintnospringchicken · 21/10/2023 11:48

Mortgage free in a 4 bedroom detached.Adult DC moved out a few years ago .We don't want to downsize as we love our house and the area.Within fifteen minutes walking various directions we've got a beach,a high street with lovely independent shops, woodland walks(NT property),tennis courts, golf course, large 24hr supermarket and a retail park with M&S,Next and other big high street stores. The train station is 2 minutes walk away and takes 8 minutes into the city centre.

Meekah · 21/10/2023 11:49

We (DH and our 2 young DC) own our (mortgaged) 3 bed, detached bungalow in a coastal town in Scotland. Privately rented for years before getting on the property ladder in our mid-30's, but climbed it fairly quickly.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/10/2023 11:50

Live in large family home with our youngest. Will be moving to our lovely flat elsewhere in 18 months or so. Own both.

Restinpeacefavouritecoathanger · 21/10/2023 13:41

Own outright a very small property in the peaks through inheritance thanks to my grandparents, this is rented out to a lovely couple this is rented out below market he is very hands on with the property and looks after it like his own with the garden etc.
We live in a mortgaged 4 bed property approximately 30 minutes from the local city centre.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 21/10/2023 13:45

Large mortgage on a 4 bed house within a city in Londons commuter belt.

It's our dream home though, and we busted our guts to get here.
