Or do you flat-share? Live with parents ? Live in temporary accommodation etc

I live with my small children in a big studio flat in London. Plan to move out in the foreseeable future as the kids will need more room. But for now it works.

What is your living situation like?

Be as honest as you like !

We live in a mortgaged 4-bed detached new build (well, it's 16 years old). We also own a holiday home (previously our main residence) in the highlands of Scotland).

Mortgage will be paid off when dh retires.

Rent from council. One bed flat.

Sodie · 21/10/2023 13:53

4 bed with extension HA adapted house in a very quiet village in Pembrokeshire. Only 26 houses on the street, ours is at a dead end surrounded by trees and wildlife. Huge back and side garden and large gated drive and front. Rent is only £106 a week

I own outright a tiny flat following divorce

defi · 21/10/2023 22:07

I live in a teeny tiny new build housing association house. It's in a lovely area that I could never afford to private rent or buy. So feel very lucky if a little cramped

BCCoach · 21/10/2023 22:12

Own outright. We rented until mid 30s (studying and working all over the world) then bought a little 2 bed cottage in a rural are of SE U.K. with a mortgage. Overpaid the mortgage and were debt-free within ten years. We have no interest in moving up the property ladder. Only 1 DC so it works for us.

troppibambini6 · 21/10/2023 22:27

We live in a big five bed detached house. We own it but with a massive mortgage. We have just accepted an offer on yesterday. We will be moving to a smaller house with four bedrooms and it's about 1,000 sq feet smaller and needs a big reno!

tunainatin · 21/10/2023 22:29

Private rent a lovely house in a nice area near good schools for a very decent price. If our landlord sells or wants us to leave for any other reason it would be difficult as we wouldn't be able to afford anything in the same area.

Wiccan · 21/10/2023 22:35

3bed no mortgage now paid off. large garden in the same nice area I grew up in. It's our forever home .

SophiaElise · 21/10/2023 22:37

4 bedroom house, own with small mortgage

Snowdropcow · 21/10/2023 22:43

I have a mortgage with my partner on a 2 bed flat. I’m in my mid-20s.

I’m so so fortunate.

I grew up in poverty, whilst my partner had a very privileged upbringing. As such my partners family put the deposit down. However, I’m the higher earner so contribute more to the mortgage.

I’ve been homeless before so it’s really a dream come true to have such stability.

GoodnightJude1 · 21/10/2023 22:49

Mortgage free 4 bed detached in a lovely village. Very fortunate to be mortgage free in our 40s.

Climbin · 21/10/2023 22:50

Interesting, I assumed most of Mumsnet would be homeowners. I rent a 3 bed in London with my 2 children, been here four years but not expecting that to last much longer, plus rental prices going crazy

Oneblindmouse · 21/10/2023 22:51

I have been widowed 15 years. 2 adult DC left home. Downsized from owned outright 4 bed semi detached to tiny 1 bed bungalow 2 years ago. Had to give up work due to disabilities. Bungalow is lovely, easy to manage and owned outright. I feel very fortunate if a little lonely at times.

alphabetti · 22/10/2023 20:12

Ex partner dragged his feet re buying a property as he has bad money management skills and keeps getting into pointless debt. We split up 8mth ago. I had saved a deposit in my mums account so just went for it and put an offer on a ex council house 3bedroom house that needed modernisation but structurally sound. So now have just bought a house for me and my daughters!! Ex partner now very sorry and wants to come live in our house with us but i’ve said NO!! Mortgage is until i’m 70 but can overpay and monthly fee is less that what rent was.

3 bedroom, mid terrace HA in a lovely market town. Lived here 24 years. Consider ourselves very lucky.

Timewentfast · 01/11/2023 01:37

3 bed detached new build (around 20 years old). Owned outright (bought without mortgage at 46). Small, ordinary and overlooked. It's near facilities though and safe and nice area. Nice to have no mortgage but will move again to try and get bungalow with less bedrooms as just me and dog. Plus I hate paying council tax on a 3 beds when the 3rd bedroom is a cupboard with a window.

Owned several houses before, made money on some houses due to renovating and / or rising markets. Lost on some due to divorce or bad purchases. Had help from parents in form of £££.

Like another poster said I too am surprised at the number of people renting although this may not be a typical sample. The housing market is a minefield nowadays.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2023 04:16

Morgan's house. Mortgage is around £250 cheaper than rentals in the area.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2023 04:16

2 bed small terrace.

Thumbsnet · 01/11/2023 04:38

I live in a privately rented 4-bed Edwardian House with my DH and DCs.

We rent out our home in London and I recently sold a property in July. Another property is going through a sale right now. A bit of an odd situation due to work, but we hope to move soon and buy our forever home in a year or so.
