NHS job offer

I've been lucky enough to be offered a new job in the NHS. I got my conditional offer today and they would like references covering the last year years of employment, no problem.
Except the email also advises not to hand in my notice until I've passed these checks.
I don't want my current manager getting what would be to them a random reference email. I like the manager and it just seems rude for it to drop in their inbox.
I haven't been there long and I didn't really expect to get this new job but it was an opportunity so I went for it but if it doesn't work out for some reason I don't want them to think that I'm actively looking for something else.
If you've left somewhere to go to the NHS how did you manage to work round this without pissing your current employers off?

Can you talk to your manager before the reference request is sent?
Be aware that, depending on the NHS Trust, the onboarding process can take a VERY long time. Around 3 months, for a very ordinary job, is quite normal for the Trust I work for, so I wouldn't put my notice in until I have received the firm offer, and you won't get that until they have all the references.
