Random question sorry..Would your young children eat smoked ham?

Catering for 25 3 and 4 year olds at DD's birthday party on Sunday. Just unpacked the mammoth food order and have discovered that I accidentally ordered smoked ham for the sandwiches instead of ordinary ham. Just wanted to get a straw poll of whether your children would eat smoked ham or if I will need to get a replacement! Thanks :)

My children will eat any processed meat in sight. They love all ham - even fancy ham.

Cowlover89 · 19/10/2023 22:36

Yep! Processed and proper ham from the butchers.

BarbaraVineFan · 19/10/2023 22:36

Thanks @mollyfolk . The reason I'm asking is that I am fairly sure that my own DD will turn her nose up at it, as she has done in the past!

If you put enough mustard on it they won't know

BarbaraVineFan · 19/10/2023 22:38

Haha @Doggymummar - I love ham and mustard!

Absolutely no chance my 2.5 yr old would notice one way or the other. It’d definitely Hall go straight down the hatch.

Oh I don’t know - mustard would be an acquired taste. Could you offer some jam or cheese sandwiches alongside them. They are also popular options.

BarbaraVineFan · 19/10/2023 22:41

@mollyfolk i am also offering cheese. No jam as I don't think they will need any extra sugar with all the cake and biscuits!

Mine would, they prefer it

BoohooWoohoo · 19/10/2023 22:44

Mine wouldn't have known the difference between smoked and normal.

DilemmaDelilah · 20/10/2023 06:27

Yes... but it does depend on HOW smoked. The Bavarian smoked I bought from Lidl once, definitely no. I didn't eat it either as I thought it tasted of turpentine, but I'm sure other people think it is delicious. Definitely no to mustard though!
You're doing cheese as well so that should be fine. Mine loved marmite and cucumber, and their favourite for birthday teas was a very orange cheese spread you used to be able to get in jars, with tomato. They probably sell the orange jar stuff in the US, but I haven't seen any in the UK for decades!

AvengedQuince · 20/10/2023 06:32

Yes to ham and mustard

FindRachel · 20/10/2023 06:33

Sandwiches aren't the most popular food at birthday parties anyway. What they will eat elsewhere they might not eat at a party because there are more exciting things on offer.

stayathomer · 20/10/2023 06:34

Another for probably wouldn’t notice as ham and cheese are those weird foods thst if they look anything like they’re supposed to kids just assume they’re ham and cheese! (Wish they’d see other foods this way😅)

cuckyplunt · 20/10/2023 06:39

They’ll only eat crisps and cake, I shouldn’t worry about it.

Girasoli · 20/10/2023 07:02

Mine wouldn't notice the difference (but probably wouldn't pick up a sandwich at a party and just have a plate full of cheese puffs and fruit)

SharonEllis · 20/10/2023 07:07

Most kids I've known wouldnt touch mustard.

Baconking · 20/10/2023 07:33

The use of mustard was clearly a joke 😂

I don't think there's a big difference in flavour of regular smoked ham. My kids would have eaten any ham

Grin

I remember when there was a Wendy's in my city and they used English mustard not the burger kind, a child on the next table screamed in horror and threw the burger down in disgust after biting into it.

Was it? Mine liked mustard at that age!

BrightlyCloudedSky · 20/10/2023 09:21

Mine would have eaten it without a second thought. However, DD's favourite sandwich at that age was a mustard sandwich (yes, just bread and mustard) so my DC are maybe not the sample you want to rely on according to this thread!

SquigglePigs · 20/10/2023 09:39

My 4 yr old wouldn't, but she's not the biggest ham fan anyway. She'd be delighted with the cheese though!

YourNameGoesHere · 20/10/2023 09:41

DS is 3 and would eat it but apparently he's a tiny oddity because he adores mustard so maybe he's not the best sample.

Mine would have a thin spread of mustard too if DH was having it, but I wouldn't have added it to party sandwiches, would you?

I would, yes. Ham goes with mustard like cheese goes with pickle, they are standard sandwiches.
