Certain films take me back to childhood, especially the old war films that I'd watch on a Sunday with my grandfather:
Bridge on the River Kwai
Lawrence of Arabia
Zulu
The Dambusters
A Bridge Too Far, etc
Films like that touch something deep inside. They sort of re-connect me with grandparents, childhood, ancestors, etc – a bit like Remembrance Sunday.
I'm also a sucker for classic French films, like Jules et Jim, Rules of the Game and La Grande Illusion.
Withnail and I is my all-time favourite. I can also spend a happy weekend binge watching the extended editions of Lord of the Rings.
The Godfather, Terminator, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, The Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Goodfellas, etc are also favourites.
As for TV series: I Claudius, Brideshead Revisited, Breaking Bad, Alan Partridge, Blackadder, The Office (British, not the American re-make), The Day Today, The Fast Show, Harry Enfield.
