HELP!!! Advice on curtains

Just brought some curtains but measured incorrectly. They are 168 X 228. They width of the window is 196cm, I have read online that the curtain panels should be double the width of the window. They look ok when they are closed and are not completely flat. Would this bother you? The 228 x 228 are out of stock now … deciding whether to send them back and get another pair. I don’t normally close the curtains as I have blinds as well. Even if I got the 228 x 228, it still wouldn’t work out as double the window width.

If you don’t normally close them it’s fine. It would bother me, though, I like a properly full curtain. To get roughly 2x or 2.5x the width with ready-made curtains just buy more than one set and sew together. Or eBay is brilliant for vintage curtains, especially fully thermal lined and interesting designer fabrics. All my curtains are eBay, largely vintage Liberty, William Morris and Sanderson. All lined already, all pencil pleat to adjust to my exact width needed. Some just needed hems taking down or up a little (lazily, with iron-on tape), and I bought separate blackout curtains that you attach with curtain hooks for pairs used in bedrooms.

The total width needs to be double, not per panel. So the 228 is 228 each panel, which is ample.

If they look OK then does it matter what it says online? Especially if you rarely close them anyway.

It's 30cm out, on curtains you don't often close. Absolutely no issue.

They look fine. I wouldn’t have them taken up though - I’d raise the rail 🙃

Benji1998 · 19/10/2023 18:19

haha yes that’s a better idea 🤣

I like the width now

CharlotteStreetW1 · 19/10/2023 18:23

When I was buying ready made curtains, I thought it was 1.5 x.

In any event, yours look absolutely fine OP.

Benji1998 · 19/10/2023 18:24

Yeah, they don’t look too bad actually. It says width should be double the length of the window , total width of curtains is 336cm and window width is 197cm which means they are 58cm out

OP posts:
Benji1998 · 19/10/2023 18:26

So the combined width of the curtains should be 1.5 times the width of the window?x

With ring top curtains it doesn't matter so much, you just need a little excess as the rings dont flattern out as I forgot recently (and I used to make curtains0

Buy another pair the same size to give a fuller look

Benji1998 · 19/10/2023 20:06

I was going to do that put they don’t have them in stock anymore unfortunately :(

I have similar shiny eyelet curtains and found the creases did not fall out. I used steam wand directly onto curtain. One curtain at a time pulled as flat as possible. Left to dry after steaming. Repeated next day as needed. Then I raised the rail to ensure curtain skimmed the floor. They look very luxurious now. Am pleased.
