Is this a beg bug? (But not on the bed)

My DC found some sort of beetle in their room last night - 8 or so. All on the floor cat seem to see ay on bed but gathered around a certain bit of furniture that they bought from gumtree 😭😭
Removed them last night but seen another today. They are tiny from googling I don't think bed bugs, but wondering if there were ay bug experts out there. They are like tiny black specks with legs but not really the same formation as bed bugs.
Any ideas appreciated!

Pictures aren't clear but it looks like carpet beetle larvae. You need to vacuum them up or they'll eat your textiles

bugalert · 18/10/2023 11:45

Thank you! They are really tiny and my camera can't capture them properly but I think you are correct on the carpet beetles.

I will get everything pulled out and do a deep clean and hoover tonight!

I’d get rid of that furniture anyway. More terrified of bed bugs than I was of COVID

Yes I think carpet beetle too. We had them recently. If you act quickly you should be able to get rid of them.

KnittedCardi · 18/10/2023 11:59

They look hairy..... If so carpet beetles. We have a few every year. Apparently they like our sheep skin rugs. Never caused any issues though. Just Hoover them up, or flick them outside!

Work2live · 18/10/2023 12:02

Looks like a carpet or biscuit beetle. Bed bugs are rounder, like an apple pip.

bugalert · 18/10/2023 12:51

Thank you everyone! Carpet beetles I can cope with, I had visions of a bed bug infection. Nothing like blowing a situation out of proportion!!
Operation clean up (and ditching the new purchase!!) will begin asap! Thank you!

Bed bugs are oval, those are not

SaturdayGiraffe · 18/10/2023 14:29

What did carpet beetles eat before carpets were invented?

Itchyitchyitchyyy · 18/10/2023 14:34

1000% not bedbugs. I've also been petrified of getting infested with them so I'm quite knowledgeable about them.

Interesting what people say about carpet beetles, I see a few in the house every year and have been known to let them be. I don't think anything's been eaten (we don't have carpet though which maybe helps)

I've had carpet beetles in my house for 16 years and never had an issue. I've always read they are pests that will leave holes in your carpet but I think they prefer all my dust under the furniture cos I'm crap at hoovering. It keeps them busy and they've not touched our carpets or anything else. We had the entire upstairs carpeted a few years ago to change the decor and the old carpet showed no signs of munching. I've never seen a large amount, even under the carpet we pulled up. There's only ever one or two here and there so we just live with them.

MerlinsBeard87 · 18/10/2023 14:50

@InterFactual they will eat carpet if it's wool, lots of carpets are synthetic these days. They eat natural fibres like wool, silk, fur. They once ate the felted feet of my sons teddy. Best thing to do is keep house well vacuumed. I've worked in historic houses and seen the damage they do

bugalert · 18/10/2023 14:56

I am relieved that the consensus seems to be carpet beetles, so thank you everyone!

We don't have carpets anywhere, just rugs and DC's room seems to be the only place they have been spotted. There is a large rug in there, not wool, and they are at the opposite side of the room. Interesting about them gathering in dust at that is exactly where they appeared to be living their best life!! 😂

So they just need to keep on top of hoovering/cleaning really! Typical teen room I suppose! And perhaps the 'vintage' furniture purchase isn't to blame, that has just disturbed their natural habitat 🤮😂
Thanks all!

Seriously???

Give your head a wobble.

We have carpet beetles come in every year around this time. Only ever find the odd one and usually in the windowsill of the main bedroom and the landing. Over the years Ive concluded they are coming in from the wood next door as those two windows are within a blowing distance.

First year I found one I went into a mild panic though 😂
