Were these bailiffs or debt collectors?

Earlier today two men in shirts, ties and smart trousers knocked on my door asking if (insert name) lived in the house next door.

I said that I didn't know the neighbour's full name and that he'd not lived there very long so wasn't sure. He moved in in July and I only knew his first name.

The guy said "well, he would have got a letter" and then the two of them walked around the house a bit before getting back into their small white van.

Who were these people? I'm in Scotland if that's relevant.

Probably Sheriff Officers

Walked around your house? Inside or outside? Is it shared accommodation?

Did you ask them who they were? They could have been anyone. I take it they didn't show you ID and you didn't confirm it wasn't fake by phoning the company?

I wouldn't give people I don't know who they are information on anybody. You don't know what trouble you could bring to someone's door or whether or not they deserve it. If someone is a friend or an official, they'll already know the name of the person living at the address they're interested in or the address of the person they're interested in. Unless it's police carrying out investigations and that tends to be obvious.

It's a terraced house with a small archway between both houses. They only stayed maybe 30 seconds after I closed my door.

I wasn't going to give out any information, as you say, I had no idea who they were and felt quite uncomfortable in the moment.

That's why I'm trying to figure out who they might have been.

They did ask me about a full name and gave a rough move in date. I just said that I didn't know their name and that they'd not lived here long.

Spoke to a friend about it and they reckon it was a sheriff's officer collecting unpaid child maintenance or council tax.
