I want a new surname (suggestions)

A bit random perhaps to some people, but I really want to change my surname!
What are the nicest surnames that you know? Any suggestions?

Background -
My surname from birth, I've always thought it was plain and boring, and it's very common.
I always imagined I would change it when I married, but I never got married, and I'm now late 40s and don't plan to marry even if I eventually meet "the one".
I don't have children, my dad is gone now, my mother has the same surname only through marriage to my dad, my siblings have different surnames through marriage, and I don't feel any particular attachment to extended family so I've no need to "honour" their name.
So I thought I'd treat myself to a new name! I want a name that when I introduce myself, people might think "that's a nice name". Something not overly common, but not so unusual that I have to spell it out repeatedly either. I am English, but I spent five years total living in different parts of Scandinavia so perhaps would be nice to choose a link to that part of my life, but doesn't need to be.

Swan. Or possibly Swann.

I like Callaghan. Sounds cool.

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 17/10/2023 22:40

I once knew someone who did this. She went for 'Wilder' which I thought was quite cool.

ItsWorkNotAParty · 17/10/2023 22:41

I know a Rainbird and a Saffron as surnames. Both lovely.

What about a street name that you've once lived on? Or something else significant. Name of primary school, childhood pet? (Try not to accidentally pick the answer to any security question! Grin )

Could you pick a few people you admire and combine their surnames so it isn't cringy?

Wigeon · 17/10/2023 22:46

Do think about whether you will have to spell it out every time, and how long it is. My maiden name was a very common four letter normal English word and I still had to spell it every time.

My favourite alternative surnames (which go with my first name) are Quinn and Silver.

poppettypop · 17/10/2023 22:47

Reed
Piper
Carmichael

senua · 17/10/2023 22:48

Pick something from the beginning of the alphabet so you will always be toward the top of any list.

PlipPlopChoo · 17/10/2023 22:48

Hornswaggle

Valstarino · 17/10/2023 22:49

Holliday

Can we have some feedback OP? Are my names too twee?Grin Do you want something normal but memorable like Buchanan?

Purpleavocado · 17/10/2023 22:53

Maybe something alliterative with your first name, so you'll be like a superhero?
Eg Lisa Lightfoot
Michelle Morgan
Sarah Starling
Etc

StrandedStarfish · 17/10/2023 22:54

Fitzroy

Listentothisonce · 17/10/2023 22:55

Phalange or Bananahammock 😂

Tessisme · 17/10/2023 22:56

I always fancied being an 'O' something with plenty of syllables, like O'Shaughnessy, O'Flaherty or O'Callaghan.

PepsiMaxLime · 17/10/2023 22:56

I’d go for Wilde or Wilder

Jewelspun · 17/10/2023 22:59

Goldfinger.

UndercoverCop · 17/10/2023 22:59

When I was at school a classmate's mum decided to change her name and that of my classmate after leaving her (awful alcoholic) husband/father of school friend. She didn't want her original surname as she didn't have a good relationship with her father either so chose Richards after Cliff Richard who she liked a lot and it didn't matter that his name wasn't actually Richards but Richard because she was adamant that was wrong.
Despite all of that when my classmate got married as an adult she kept Richards for her mum, who was in ill health by that point.
On that basis OP choose whatever you want for whatever reason you want!

justjeansandanicetop · 17/10/2023 23:00

Carrington

Cartwright

Elliott

Midwinter

Forrest

Alexander

St John / St Lawrence

There are lots of great Mc / Mac names but possibly a non starter if you have no Scottish or Irish connections.

bluesatin · 17/10/2023 23:00

I've been researching my family tree for a while and come across some weird surnames (my own is very common). So - how about Upex or Bolitho?
