Red light to sleep is amazing!

Anyone else going to bed with a red night light or similar? I’ve nicked my toddlers new lamp as he kept chucking it out his room and it changes to any colour you want including bright red and, my god, it’s awesome! I know I sound a bit like I need to get a life but I can’t explain how relaxed I feel in bed with it on and I’ve had the best few nights sleep in ages. I’ve always been a blackout blinds, need total darkness to sleep so this has really surprised me. Please tell me I’m not alone, my DH looked at me earlier like I’d lost the plot when I tried to explain.

Yes. This worked for me after my whole life needing complete darkness to sleep. Then a trauma stopped me sleeping in the dark.

I couldn't sleep with normal low level night light on, couldn't sleep with bedside lights on and couldn't sleep in the dark anymore.

But low red light was perfect. Very soothing.

Would one of those pinky coloured salt lights have the same effect?

JeopardyMoose · 16/10/2023 23:54

Yes! We have red fairy lights from Ikea. They are so soothing to sleep in. I can also
read while DH sleepS as they show up print really well.

I’ve never consistently slept in darkness in my adult life. I usually have a small colour changed LED lamp on and take one when I travel too.

I like purple lights. Green is surprisingly good too.
(I tried all the different combos when we got our first smart bulb!)

I love pitch black. I've been keeping a salt lamp on during the day and turn it off before sleep. I wish I could stand having it on as it's so good for you.
I'm glad you're all able to cope with some light. I have to take an eye mask when I travel.

NancyMaloni · 16/10/2023 23:58

I will try it

ALongHardWinter · 17/10/2023 01:32

I am intrigued as I find it impossible to sleep with any sort of light on. Oddly, most noise doesn't bother me,but I can't even stand the blue 'on' light on my tower fan,and have to drape a sock over it!

ChocAuVin · 17/10/2023 01:45

I like to sleep in total darkness but love the soft pinky glow of my salt lamp when winding down in bed.

I've reverted to sleeping with the curtains open, which I did as a child and I find it very soothing. I'm in suburban Melbourne and light pollution is very low. I haven't liked sleeping with the bedroom door closed since my DH died and only do so if it's very cold or very hot, so running systems.

TheNestedIf · 17/10/2023 02:56

I spend the evening in very low light with just some fairy lights and a desk lamp which looks like the moon. It is usually on red. I have trouble sleeping (can you tell from the time of the post) and bright light makes it worse, so this helps me wind down. The lights go off as soon as I'm ready to sleep, though, because I sleep best in pitch darkness and if I wake up with a light on, I wake up too much to easily go back to sleep.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 17/10/2023 03:57

I must try that as I found one that I had for my son and you can also change it to lots of lovely relaxing colours, think it has bunny ears on it or something got in Aldi a few years ago. Will get batteries weekend and try it as you can see from my late reply have insomnia so this may relax me. Thanks for advise.

ttacticall · 17/10/2023 04:03

@Nosleepforthismum Which night light are you using?

Devilsmommy · 17/10/2023 04:10

Yeah I've had a really good sleep with my little ones tommee tippee red light. I was amazed as I'm a pitch black room sleeper normally because of insomnia

FoodMishap · 17/10/2023 04:15

I love my low red light (old ikea plastic one) I just have on it right before sleep to relax me and still sleep in the dark.

my husband takes the piss however and calls me ‘a student.’
