The other day I got a notification on Instagram saying that I was suspended from sending direct messages because of something that I sent to someone in April 2021 which was an image of a sexual nature involving a minor. It showed me a tiny thumbnail photo of what the image was and it was a photo of me and my then toddler clinging to my leg. Nothing sexual about it. I thought it was a bit weird especially as it was so long ago so I changed my password. A day later, I tried to log on and it says my account has now been completely suspended due to breaching the community guidelines (no other indication of what I have done) and I have 180 days to appeal it. I can’t get into my Instagram account at all. I have tried to appeal it using the form and I get a message saying “Your account was permanently disabled because it did not follow our community standards. We cannot review this decision”. So by the sounds of it I can’t even appeal it and my account has now been deleted with no notice. When my friends search for my name my profile has gone.

I know it’s only social media but I had so many photos on there especially of my children, some of which I don’t have on my phone anymore because of an iCloud backup issue when I swapped phones. I stupidly thought I would always have access to them on Instagram. I am really upset that I’ve lost it all and instagram’s customer service is non existent so I can’t contact anybody. It’s clearly a mistake, I haven’t posted anything that I shouldn’t have and I only had family and friends on my account. Anyone been in this position and is there anything I can do?

Was your toddler nude or semi nude in the image? If so whoever you sent it to has most likely reported you/that image for those reasons. I can't see how instagram would have even been made aware of it otherwise let alone for those reasons. I'd not have thought there's much you can do about the account, unfortunately other than fill out this form and hope for the best.

@dontgobaconmyheart no they were clothed. They had their head around my bum area clinging onto me and the photo apparently contains child exploitation according to Instagram! The image was back in April 2021 so I have no idea why it would be reviewed now. I have tried to fill out that form but it says that because I have been permanently suspended the decision cannot be reviewed. So looks like it’s gone forever.

Meh. I couldn't get worked up about this. Why post so many photos of your kids for strangers to see?

It's possible to have a private account on Instagram.

Talk about missing the point as well as not having a clue how IG works 😐

Odd photo to post...

Sometimes a thumbnail of a crease, like a bent arm etc., can look like a genital. If a computer AI approves it as porn, then you'd have to reach an actual human. I'd just make a new Instagram with a different email, if possible.

Moonshine160 · 16/10/2023 20:54

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy my account is private and I only have family and friends on it.

@StarlightLime odd in what way? It’s a photo of me and my son…

@Siwa yes I’m wondering if a robot/algorithm or however it works has flagged it but if it was actually reviewed by a human it’s obvious it’s nothing at all. Impossible for me to reach an actual human though.

A photo of him with his head pressed into your bum sounds odd, sorry 🤷🏻‍♀️

CantFindTheBeat · 16/10/2023 21:04

Presume OP had clothes on and it's her child cuddling her?

Turtles4543 · 16/10/2023 21:06

I lost an account couple of years ago (it was the dog’s). Said id unfollowed too many people, had to take a photo of myself with a code. Never got it back though.

HercuIesMorse · 16/10/2023 21:19

@StarlightLime you do realise that children are small, yes? Newsflash: child hugs mother.

Sorry you're going through this op. Instagram's system is ridiculous. Their system is ridiculous and so opaque.

Fissssh · 16/10/2023 21:26

Bots scour chats on Meta products (such as Facebook and Instagram). It's likely faulty AI found it and decided it was an offensive picture and no human has had any contact with it.

There's a few ideas here that might help

I always think that it's very unfair to disable your account without allowing you to download the photos first......as all your photos are your property

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 16/10/2023 21:33

@StarlightLime

What the bloody hell is wrong with you?

You know that children cling onto their mums right? You also must know they are short and often bum height?

Obviously this is a mistake. Unjust.

Maybe op could just use some sympathy or advice rather than the implications she's some kind of pervert for posting a pic on a private acc of her child hugging her.

Ffs, I've got to get off here tonight, doing my head in...

PeakABoocha · 16/10/2023 21:40

@Moonshine160 i know many people who basically use FB as a backup for their child’s photos. And many would be totally disgusted at loosing access to their account.
Ive been blocked from my account on FB. Not even sure why (but then I didn’t really try to get back in it - I hardly use it!).

Its crap. You can’t speak to a human and many of those ‘decisions’ are totally arbitrary…,
