Not getting house from council -would you be sad about it?

Im currently in a 1 bed flat
When I got this flat It was filthy
The floor was covered in urine
Stains up the walls etc.
I've made it a home the best I can
Anyway I've been offered a 2 bed house
The house inspector came out and gave me a list of jobs
I need to repaint three ceilings because I got paint from the walls on them
I need to paint my front door outside (even tho it's about 70 years old and was a mess when I moved in)
I know it sounds stupid but I'm just so down about it
I live alone and my only other family is my dad who is 80 and I'm his carer as he has dementia
I'm only moving to be closer to him as the commute at the minute is 30 mins
Il show you pics of the floor when I moved in and il show you the paint on ceiling they are complaining about
Bare in mind when I moved in every wall was a different colour ,the ceiling was full of cigarette smoke

@ThornInMySide84 deserve ? It's a bidding system
I've been on the list 10 years now
If there's a 2 bed (1 person -3 person ) then I'm entitled to bid on it

Okay but what's the relevance of the thread title?

ainkipinky · 16/10/2023 14:10

My title was in reference to if I don't do these things I won't get this house
When it was a actual dive when I moved in
Yet they are moaning about paint on a ceiling

That's ridiculous, the only HA or CH I've seen that haven't been complete shitholes are the new build ones. Mine was awful when we moved in

I'd just roll my sleeves up and get it done though. And hope that the new house isn't a complete shithole that needs redecorating straight away

Squiggles23 · 16/10/2023 14:52

Sounds ridiculous but as others have said it isn’t worth risking losing the house.

At worse if you leave the front door you could say it’s how it was and you don’t have the money for new paint at the moment and don’t think it’s fair to do it anyway as it wasn’t newly painted for you. However, I think it would be better to focus on the place you are getting out of it and just do it.

Maybe afterwards put in a complaint with the council although no idea if they will do anything.

Ignore all the moaning myrtles on about your thread name. Not sure what there issue is.

I think maybe you are a bit like me and you hate injustice? I can get a bit fixated on it sometimes. Like in your situation they gave you a house to move into that was a shit tip and now if you want to move out of it they are looking for perfect cutting in on the ceiling. It feels petty and unfair. I'd put my head down, or up if painting the ceilings and spend the whole time muttering away to myself making up conversations in my head about what I would say to them. Then when they turn up and I have the house perfect I'd just smile and nod along.

Good luck and good luck with new house, née beginnings are always both scary and exciting.

Blackcoffee1 · 16/10/2023 15:19

Why don’t you get little sample pots of the matching colours, and a thin paint brush, and simply neaten up the edges? Should be easier than repainting the whole wall/ceiling.

samupnorth · 16/10/2023 15:38

The person sounds like a jobsworth so make sure they don’t get to ruin your chances of your new house . Buy some biscuits for the next visit and kill them with kindness and the best paint job you can do !

JenniferBooth · 16/10/2023 16:13

Ring the council adult services and tell them you will need help from social care for your dad so you can spruce up your flat as they have required before you move out!!!! 😏

ainkipinky · 16/10/2023 16:18

I'm all done now thankfully
Hopefully they won't find anything else when they come back
This picture is the house I'm hopefully moving too -can you see the white paint on the green

Stop this and just get it done asap if this was me I’d cut my losses get my painting gear on get the paint and be all over it. I’m stuck in a private rent wanting a house and it seems impossible so snap it up and do what you can. They aren’t asking for a whole house renovation.

Thistlelass · 16/10/2023 16:33

Lovely new house for Christmas!

Why does a single person deserve a 2 bedroom flat anyway from the council?

I'm a mum of 3 small children in a big studio flat and will need to move soon but at the moment it's working for us... as a single person she definitely does not need a 2 bed. It will take me just over 9 years to successfully bid for a 2 bed council flat in my area...

JenniferBooth · 16/10/2023 17:12

@dellesapples OP is caring for her dad who has dementia Perhaps the second room might be for him.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 16/10/2023 17:24

@dellesapples

Your post is infuriating. Op's situation has nothing to do with you and its really spiteful to comment as you have.sure you wouldn't want anyone questioning you when you finally get the property you want 🙄

Congrats op.

But OP getting a house doesn't affect your.chances. she has been offered the house after being on the waiting list for 10 years. She has been offered it because she has been assessed as being entitled to it.

Enjoy your new home.OP

dellesapples · 16/10/2023 17:41

Sorry I didn't consider the second room may be for her father - apologies.

ainkipinky · 17/10/2023 09:16

I've been on the list 10 years now
I've been in this 1 bed for that long
In the future with my dads dementia getting worse it's going to be a weight off my mind knowing I have a spare room if he ever needs it
Plus this house is closer to him which means I can be there quickly if needs be
It's just going to make looking after him much easier
Also does this look straight enough ?
I used tape and a ruler
Obviously it's not perfect

It's better than what I can do. If the housing officer wants a straighter line suggest he gets it skimmed as it's going to be impossible to get a straightline otherwise. On other thoughts, given the powerplay in the situation, just stay quiet and smile.

Wishing you a prosperous fresh start in your new home. ✨️

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 17/10/2023 09:27

Great job!

ainkipinky · 18/10/2023 08:02

Sorry to be annoying but this is the best I can do for my bathroom
I'm scared to get too close with the white incase it goes on the blue
The walls /ceiling are so uneven
I hope I don't fail because of this

I think it looks great! The new tenant will redecorate anyway and you have done what was expected of you!

Happy new house!

Firsttimemum120 · 18/10/2023 21:22

How did it go? Let us know!

User562377 · 18/10/2023 21:25

It looks great. I hope you get your new place.
Sounds incredibly annoying the detail you have to meet but I good for you just getting on and doing it.

DarkDarkNight · 18/10/2023 21:58

It’s a pain especially considering the mess when you moved in, but think short term pain for long term gain, hopefully you’ll get it sorted. Some masking tape and just touch it up.

It’s stupid of them to insist on the door considering painting over a door that’s presumably in bad condition and peeling isn’t going to look good.

ainkypinky · 20/10/2023 10:35

Passed the home check
They need a manger to sign it off and should get the keys next week
It's been such a long process but hopefully the end is in sight now
