I know it’s only a cold but….

I’ve felt dreadful for a week now. Snotty note, sore throat, achey limbs, sinuses swollen and painful and a horrible pressure in my head.
I’ve done loads of covid tests so it’s definitely not that but I feel awful. I had 2 days in bed but have a 6 and 3 year old so can’t just be out of action for a week+. I’m working from home and staying away from others, DH and the kids had it last week but it was just a normal cold for them- snotty for a few days and now better.
Every day I wake up thinking I’ll feel better today and feel rotten and back to square one! Anyone else had this? How long until I’m better?

If it’s been a week and you’re no better at all, you’d be within your rights to see the GP. You might have a sinus infection.

Wolfcub · 16/10/2023 08:09

It's a shocker op, every time I think I'm on the mend I wake up feeling worse. I'm actually taking sick leave for the first time in about six years

MintJulia · 16/10/2023 08:12

I'm on week four. Now I just have a residual cough and a slight ache in one ear.

Keep warm, rest when you can and plenty of fluids. I'm a single mum too and 7.30 school run has not been fun.

I had that. I was ill for 2.5 weeks , 3 days of which I had to stay in bed. The last couple of days I had horrible vertigo too

My Covid tests were neg even though my son had positive Covid tests during the same time

Yep it sounds like a sinus infection:

Symptoms: swollen painful sinuses
blocked nose
mucus
sinus headache
pain across cheeks forehead or around eyes
aching
high temp

It warrants antibiotics which you should be able to get sent to a pharmacy following a gp phone appointment.

DaftQuestionForToday · 16/10/2023 08:26

They have said the test kits aren't terribly good picking up Covid. So it might still be covid.

Hopefully you'll soon be through the other side 💐

GotMooMilk · 16/10/2023 09:25

@DaftQuestionForToday i know I’ve tested daily and when really symptomatic but it’s still negative so I can only assume it’s another horrible RSV.

My good friend is a GP so I’ve been speaking to her but she has just said it’s likely viral and there’s loads about so I haven’t seen my own GP. I’m just feeling sorry for myself! I can’t even imagine for people who have chronic health conditions who have to parent daily while feeling unwell it must be so hard.

Tomorrow. As in, you will start to feel better.
At least for me I always look back on a day like today, when I finally despaired of getting better, as the nadir.
Hope it is so go you :)

BeginningToLookALotLike · 16/10/2023 09:44

I had this earlier in the year and it turned into a chest infection. Antibiotics cleared it up.

warmmfeet · 16/10/2023 09:46

I had this last year and it lasted 3 weeks I'm sorry to say. I had a 4 and 1 year old so couldn't rest either. Steaming my head over a big bowl of hot water with a spoonful of Vicks vapour rub in helped me a lot in the 3rd week and I wished I'd done it sooner. Worth a try!

SabbatWheel · 16/10/2023 09:47

Our GP doesn’t give ABs for sinus infections any more, they prescribe steroid nasal sprays which are much more effective.

I’ve got the shitty cold right now which is becoming sinusitis so I’m dosing up with pirinase and steaming my head - it’ll clear in a day or two.

AnnaMagnani · 16/10/2023 09:53

I'm on day 6 and still in bed. With a sodding cold, it's not right!

Birchvalley · 16/10/2023 10:37

I’ve got this at the moment- I’m taking sinutabs to clear my head a bit so I can carry on with the chores. I feel dreadful.

GotMooMilk · 16/10/2023 10:42

@SabbatWheel that’s what my friend recommended so have been using that since yesterday eve. @warmmfeet I’m going to try that today. I’ll try anything!
I was unloading the washing machine earlier and I thought my head was going to explode! I’ve never had sinus issues before with colds so that’s the thing I’m struggling the most with tbh

Poor OP, I had this and I think still have something remaining - when I blow my nose, the corner of my eye bubbles and stuff shoots out.

That can't be good...

APurpleSquirrel · 16/10/2023 10:50

I've got this too - I'm just over a week in; feels like one step forward & 2 back!

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 16/10/2023 10:53

I have a lingering cold too. It's not bad enough to take time out from work etc, but bad enough to make me feel rotten while I do it Grin

Normally I am crook for 2-3 days, max. I've had this for a week now and no sign of it going. It's very frustrating!

I can only assume the cold strain going around is a lingerer....

TheSnailAndTheWaaaail · 16/10/2023 11:01

I've got this too, it's the cold that just won't go away!

I have something stuck in my sinuses cause when I blow my nose I feel it moving but it seems to be too big or firm to be blown out? Gross. You have my sympathy, it's grim!

Both kids are snotty messes too and have been for a couple of weeks.

ilovebagpuss · 16/10/2023 11:56

Week 4! Def not covid either but felt worse than last covid.
Finally feel my asthma is under control and just a tickly cough and tiredness now.
Just hit the lemsips and try and rest. I also started on Berocca last week.
I only had 1 day off wish I had taken a week to rest now.

GotMooMilk · 16/10/2023 14:18

Gosh I’m so sorry for those who it’s been going on for weeks! I’m really hoping it doesn’t last 4 weeks 😵‍💫

OP posts:
AnnaMagnani · 16/10/2023 19:55

@ilovebagpuss did you have a course of steroids?

I felt particularly bleak today and did my peak flow - it was down by 100.

Found the end of an old strip of prednisolone, took those and it's like a miracle has happened. Will be off to GP first thing tomorrow.

Feel like an idiot as now recall I always need steroids with a cold. If you have struggled on for 4 weeks without them, please don't do it again!

MuggleMe · 16/10/2023 20:13

I had all these symptoms including the sinusitis and tested positive for COVID. Felt like my head was just snot covered in skin for a couple of days. Stayed positive for nearly 2 weeks. Into week 3 and back at work but the fatigue is still flooring me.

GotMooMilk · 16/10/2023 21:43

@MuggleMe sorry to hear that, perhaps it is. I feel worse than the 2 times I’ve known I’ve had covid! Covid was much more chesty and prickly for me whereas all the discomfort seems to be in my head and throat this time.

OP posts:
ElleLeopine · 16/10/2023 21:46

These are my exact symptoms. I've had a horrendous head cold with a cough, and it's just settled on my sinuses.

However, I tested positive for Covid on Friday. So 🤷‍♀️
