FFS a margarine brand I can trust??

I bought Bertolli Olive Oil spread for years and years. Lovely, nice product.

A month or so ago we noticed their recipe had changed to a really shot recipe that made it difficult to spread and also tastes rubbish. Noticed they reduced the olive oil content from 20% to 5% (or something)..

OK fine, we though. We'll use Supermarket own-brand olive spread instead. Only to find they've all done the exact same thing with the ingredients. Virtually no olive oil, virtually all rubbish.

OK fine, we thought. We'll go with Flora. At least Flora you can spread on white bread without it tearing, it's tastes alright, so we've bought Flora for the past couple of months. Lo and behold! We've opened our most recent Flora and they've changed their ingredients now too! It's unspreadable, it's nasty and pale it tastes minging.

All these brands have put their prices up while reducing the quality of their ingredients it's a total piss take.

FFS. We can't have butter because we have high cholesterol, so need a low cholesterol diet. Hence being dependent on butter alternatives.
Any recommendations??

Could you try not having spread? It's easy to get used to. Just have to be a bit careful what you spread on

Olive oil spread : easy to make, healthy to eat. (explore-italian-culture.com) this is not something I have tried but maybe worth a shot? Sounds simple - freeze olive oil in a lidded tub, tah da (I mean, can it be that easy? You'll have to report back!)

This olive oil spread recipe is healthy, inexpensive and easy to make in less than ten minutes.

What do you use the margarine for? I only use it for bulk baking, like when I need to make loads of buns for school or something. I do have the option of butter which I use for general cooking, but it’s only used maybe once a week for a jacket potato or baking brownies. What you use it for might help with our recommendations?

I'm sure I read that butter causing high cholesterol is a myth.

Quitelikeit · 15/10/2023 22:07

Imo the spreads you are using are ultra processed and will cause far more damage than real butter will

It is disputed that real foods harm our bodies

Devilsmommy · 15/10/2023 22:32

I use dairy free one called Pure. They also do an olive oil one

That's very inspiring, thanks!

Sandwiches, toast, crumpets etc.

Real butter is miles better for you and better tasting than margarine, and I think the dietary cholesterol link has been debunked

Ok yes thanks, I just don't think I can convince my Yorkshire man husband who has a heart condition and is very set in his ways of that. Just looking for alternatives!

The whole saturated fats and cholesterol stuff is bad science that’s 70 years out of date.
Butter is far better for you than over processed chemicals.

X posted, sorry!
My ex is the same.

Cynderella · 15/10/2023 22:40

I would rather have thinly spread butter than ANY margarine.

Honestly butter is way better for you. Clover if you must have some sort of spreadable thing but honestly you’re better off just using a very small amount of butter.

GrumpyPanda · 15/10/2023 22:43

My sister in Germany uses a butter mixed with yogurt. Maybe try something of the sort?

Honeyroar · 15/10/2023 22:47

Another vote for Pure as a dairy free alternative. I use it for baking the vegan alternatives for my café. It also spreads well on bread.

Another vote for Pure (sunflower variety) if you really don’t want to use butter.

I also use Pure. I had to give up butter and their Buttery one is fine. Nothing tastes like butter but it's really not bad.

Maddy70 · 15/10/2023 22:55

All margarine are shit and terrible for you. Use proper butter or olive oil instead

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/10/2023 23:01

Why not drizzle (or dip) bread in decent olive oil and sea salt? It tastes a million times better than crappy spreads.

Yeessss

I would rather have actual butter on my toast on the first day of the month ONLY than ever eat margarine. It’s minging and always has been.

Try no spread op - just jam on your crumpet, pb on your toast.

You can hardly do that with packed-lunch sandwiches, or crumpets, can you? Confused

Talipesmum · 15/10/2023 23:16

Maybe compromise with anchor spreadable? We have that and really like it. It’s 54% butter and the rest is rapeseed oil etc.
