FFS a margarine brand I can trust??

I bought Bertolli Olive Oil spread for years and years. Lovely, nice product.

A month or so ago we noticed their recipe had changed to a really shot recipe that made it difficult to spread and also tastes rubbish. Noticed they reduced the olive oil content from 20% to 5% (or something)..

OK fine, we though. We'll use Supermarket own-brand olive spread instead. Only to find they've all done the exact same thing with the ingredients. Virtually no olive oil, virtually all rubbish.

OK fine, we thought. We'll go with Flora. At least Flora you can spread on white bread without it tearing, it's tastes alright, so we've bought Flora for the past couple of months. Lo and behold! We've opened our most recent Flora and they've changed their ingredients now too! It's unspreadable, it's nasty and pale it tastes minging.

All these brands have put their prices up while reducing the quality of their ingredients it's a total piss take.

FFS. We can't have butter because we have high cholesterol, so need a low cholesterol diet. Hence being dependent on butter alternatives.
Any recommendations??

I had to reluctantly move over to spread rather than butter when Ds2 developed a dairy intolerance as well as my own.

Pure - rock hard, tastes so so
Naturli - expensive, spreads well but doesn't keep. Contains nuts so can't go in packed lunches.
Vitalite - tastes so so, he doesn't mind it, though. Spreads straight from the fridge. Easy to get hold of.
Vioblock - tastes lovely. Have to spread it at room temperature but it goes rancid in a butter dish after a day.

We use vitalite, day to day and I occasionally buy vioblock for baking where oil doesn't work.

Olive oil spreads have always been a con.

Yeessss

I would rather have actual butter on my toast on the first day of the month ONLY than ever eat margarine. It’s minging and always has been.

Try no spread op - just jam on your crumpet, pb on your toast.

I am almost at this point, not because of cholesterol, but because I am finding it harder and harder to keep to a reasonable (normal BMI) weight.

I have accepted that butter is empty calories, and I can't have it often. So, that means not having bread more or less every day. Tonight, I made garlic bread (with butter!) because it was part of my dinner. I probably won't eat any bread for days now, as it's pretty much only as part of a dinner such as soup with garlic bread or a cheese toastie and salad. What used to be a snack or quick lunch is now a dinner. Lunch has to carb free.

If you can't eat butter, there's no pleasure in eating bread, crumpets etc!

morbidcuriosity · 16/10/2023 01:15

Sorry, yes forget my post.. its butter.. just re read and saw you said no to that!

MidnightOnceMore · 16/10/2023 01:17

Margarine is so unhealthy, if I wasn't eating butter for health reasons there's no way I'd switch to marg.

EveSix · 16/10/2023 01:49

Lurpak spreadable is margarine and tastes OK, maybe try that?

QueenBitch666 · 16/10/2023 02:19

I use vegan marg as I don't want to contribute to the slavery, rape and slaughter of cows. I really couldn't give a flying fart about the ' alleged ' benefits of butter 🙄

blacksax · 15/10/2023 23:12

You can hardly do that with packed-lunch sandwiches, or crumpets, can you? Confused

Why add extra salt?

happylittlesloth · 16/10/2023 06:34

Have you tried that benecol stuff that helps lowers cholesterol?

kikisparks · 16/10/2023 06:40

Naturli is lovely but expensive- can get it in Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

StopLickingTheDog · 16/10/2023 06:46

The flora in the green tub has changed recipe at the same time their buttery version has gone back to a vegan recipe. I'm yet to try it as still using the green tub up, but I suspect the buttery one is now more like the green one used to be.

Sandwiches can have mayonnaise instead.

ToussaintTheChef · 16/10/2023 06:51

Processed shit is what causes cholesterol problems - get butter!

Can we not turn this into a vegan superiority thread, please? Your comment was not necessary.

I have butter for toast, crumpets etc and margarine spread for sandwiches, as it's cheaper. I have got one from Aldi at the moment(Beautifully Buttery) and it's okay, spreads well but doesn't taste of much.

Quitelikeit · 15/10/2023 22:07

Imo the spreads you are using are ultra processed and will cause far more damage than real butter will

It is disputed that real foods harm our bodies

Oh FFS, again with this absolute horseshit. I wish people would stop perpetuating this nonsense.

I'm sure I read that butter causing high cholesterol is a myth.

True. It’s the sugar, not the fat.

CurlewKate · 16/10/2023 07:08

If you're not a vegan just use butter?

Ultra Processed is the latest fad for the orthorexics of MN.

@Circumferences
M&S Olive oil spread is still 21% olive oil

Hmm. I wouldn't say it's a fad.

ginislife · 16/10/2023 07:17

I've never understood why anyone would eat something 1 molecule off being plastic. Margarine is disgusting stuff. Butter is churned milk and maybe a bit of salt. I bet your husband is still having milk in his tea !

Wtf is it with this latest "ultra high processed" drama? Chicken nuggets are no worse for you this week than they were last week.

I presume someone's written a book or something and needs to make some ££.

Ok yes thanks, I just don't think I can convince my Yorkshire man husband who has a heart condition and is very set in his ways of that. Just looking for alternatives!

Get him to look at the ingredients list of these spreads. He will be absolutely horrified at what’s in them.

Olive oil spread : easy to make, healthy to eat. (explore-italian-culture.com) this is not something I have tried but maybe worth a shot? Sounds simple - freeze olive oil in a lidded tub, tah da (I mean, can it be that easy? You'll have to report back!)

I have done this, it works pretty well but it does turn a slightly unappetising greenish colour.

GuitarGeorge · 16/10/2023 07:34

Butter but use very sparingly?

I’d rather go without than eat margarine.
