FFS a margarine brand I can trust??

I bought Bertolli Olive Oil spread for years and years. Lovely, nice product.

A month or so ago we noticed their recipe had changed to a really shot recipe that made it difficult to spread and also tastes rubbish. Noticed they reduced the olive oil content from 20% to 5% (or something)..

OK fine, we though. We'll use Supermarket own-brand olive spread instead. Only to find they've all done the exact same thing with the ingredients. Virtually no olive oil, virtually all rubbish.

OK fine, we thought. We'll go with Flora. At least Flora you can spread on white bread without it tearing, it's tastes alright, so we've bought Flora for the past couple of months. Lo and behold! We've opened our most recent Flora and they've changed their ingredients now too! It's unspreadable, it's nasty and pale it tastes minging.

All these brands have put their prices up while reducing the quality of their ingredients it's a total piss take.

FFS. We can't have butter because we have high cholesterol, so need a low cholesterol diet. Hence being dependent on butter alternatives.
Any recommendations??

Why not drizzle (or dip) bread in decent olive oil and sea salt? It tastes a million times better than crappy spreads.

This is what I would do OP. Sounds s bit weird at first but if you want a decent quality alternative to butter, this is your best bet.

None of the spreads you buy at the supermarket are going to be good for your body - they are all ultra processed - even before these recipe changes.

Wtf is it with this latest "ultra high processed" drama? Chicken nuggets are no worse for you this week than they were last week.

I presume someone's written a book or something and needs to make some ££.

Yes there is a book. Nobody writes a sensible book "everything in moderation" because it wont sell.
Too many people fall for the latest scaremongering book based on cherry picking of research

Lurpak spreadable is margarine and tastes OK, maybe try that?

Lurpak is butter.

PinkRoses1245 · 16/10/2023 08:07

All those spreads are awful for you. Have small quantities of butter

dottiedodah · 16/10/2023 08:36

Butter is a pure product.I tend to put it on one side of the sandwich only.Much better than something manufactured

dimsumfatsum · 16/10/2023 08:39

I'm sure I read that Margarine/spread is only one chemical reaction away from being plastic. Use butter.

gotomomo · 16/10/2023 08:45

You could use a little olive oil to moisten for sandwiches and a little mashed avocado works well. Avoid the ultra processed "healthy" option, it isn't, it's a con. Use less spread is the answer

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 16/10/2023 09:04

I use Pure after years of using Flora Pro-Activ
Light. I would use butter but it means leaving it to soften.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 16/10/2023 09:08

If I do have scrambled eggs on toast I make with butter and don’t butter the toast. If I make egg Mayo sandwiches, again, don’t butter the bread. Same with peanut butter and marmite on toast, no butter

Recently bought a tub of Flora, knew something was odd straight away. It did not melt on toast or crumpets, it just stayed as a layer on the top.
Then we tied adding jam on after, the butter just mixed with the jam. Luckily, the Lurpak was on offer at the time, so changed to that instead!

Yes, or make your own. It’s easy;

Have you made this? I am very tempted.

INeedNewShoes · 16/10/2023 09:37

A small amount of butter will do no harm to your cholesterol and margarine is far far worse for us in other ways. I'd focus on eating foods that are good for cholesterol rather than throwing out small amounts of the bad ones.

Lovethatforyouhun · 16/10/2023 09:46

Ultra processed marg is full of trans fats and junk worse for your health than a bit of butter.

Quitelikeit · 16/10/2023 10:30

@InterFactual

what are you talking about?

you believe margarine is healthier than real butter?

sigh

HarrietSpying · 16/10/2023 10:31

Just have butter. At least you know what’s in it. Would not touch any of those ultra processed spreads.

HarrietSpying · 16/10/2023 10:35

I've never understood why anyone would eat something 1 molecule off being plastic. Margarine is disgusting stuff. Butter is churned milk and maybe a bit of salt. I bet your husband is still having milk in his tea !

Even the Zoe people say that people with raised lipids should avoid butter and that although margarine is UPF, it is OK in these circumstances

Humidititties · 16/10/2023 10:41

I don't like the taste of butter so I use a very thin scraping of light mayo, the Heinz one

Water is one atom off being hydrogen peroxide but that doesn't make water bad. I don't think marg is healthy, although I like the taste more than butter, but it's a silly argument.

Eating real food is considered a fad now? 🤯

You probably did but you can read all sorts of bullshit on the Internet.

No, getting in a flap about "unhealthy" food that we already know isn't particularly good for us, seems to be the fad.

Obviously, heavily processed food is not as nutritionally beneficial as whole foods. I don't know why this is being treated as some new revelation.

EVHead · 16/10/2023 15:41

Have butter. My brother has been vegan for 30 years and he has high cholesterol!
