Anyone work in the nhs? Quick references question

I was offered a job in the nhs (admin) on Friday. They said it is subject to references. Will I receive a written job offer before they contact my references? My current boss is not going to be happy and I want to have the conversation with him before he gets contacted. But I don’t want to do it until I can be certain I have somewhere else to go to.

I only know about medical staff, but no offer until references ok'd

Sleepwhatsthazzz · 15/10/2023 21:02

Hi nó you won't as they can't give you a written offer until your references have checked out.

Catsonskis · 15/10/2023 21:04

You normally get a written conditional offer before they start the checks including references, only once references are back and all checks complete (expect this to take weeks/months) will they offer an unconditional offer with a start date.

Congrats!
Conditional offer until references back, then formal/unconditional offer

I work in the NHS, and a colleague who works in my Trust was offered a job in the same Trust (a promotion in the same department). One of his referees was on sick leave and not checking their emails. HR made said colleague find another referee and threatened to withdraw the job offer!

Presumably you’re being recruited through the TRAC system?

If so you will receive a conditional offer by email. You are advised not to hand in your notice until you receive your unconditional once DBS, references and occupational health checks are complete.

You can advise your old boss that they will receive a reference request once your conditional offer is processed.

Thank you all! Yes, the application has all gone through the trac system. I don’t mind telling him when I’ve got a conditional offer, but don’t want to tell him when I’ve only had a phone call.

That’s good, it can be slow but you will get confirmation, please ignore people saying you won’t.

Good luck in your new role.

Thank you everyone for your help. @SauvignonBlanche when you say it can take time to get confirmation - do you think I should be worried that I have not had anything through? It is now Tuesday evening and I received the phone call on Friday lunch time. But since then I have had no email from trac or any other confirmation. I am beginning to worry that they called the wrong candidate

I wouldn’t be overly concerned, it’s very slow but as I’m old and cynical I also know that it can also be unreliable.

If you haven’t heard by the end of the week I’d give them a call.

Thank you!
