I am the baker of the family and I have trusted cupcake, brownie recipes etc but Im a bit nervous about creating a dessert table for my niece's party. Any tips greatly appreciated....

If you are good at brownies and cup cakes obviously do those. Fruit crumble is very easy and you can buy cardboard cupcake cases a bit bigger that you could put them in. Millionaires shortbread.

I would do something like a mini brownie, a cake up and something like fruit salad. Things that can easily be portion on a paper plate and eaten standing up.

Doing something like trifle that is going to require ramakins unless you have loads and loads it will end up costly to buy and a nightmare to store away afterwards.

I'm no help on the baking front, but i do make cake toppers!! They could be in blue with age / name / occasion on them!

I'd recommend looking at Jane's Patisserie website - she has lots of ideas for traybake, cupcakes, small cakes, fudge, chocolates etc:

Sorry if it has been mentioned, I just skimmed the comments but cake pops could be an option also !

Also I think you’re mad to even consider faffing about with individual portions. For 20 people, maybe. For 100? It will take hours and hours.

I am with you.

I'm also not convinced that some of what has been suggested works as a dessert. For me things like cupcakes, rocky road, flapjack and malteser bars are all delicious, but more of afternoon tea/snack rather than a dessert. I'd focus on massive pavlovas, cheesecakes, banoffees, something chocolatey and then something which is less creamy and rich for those inclined ie Bakewell tart or a fruit pie. OK they might look a bit messy once people start to help themselves, but in my experience no one cares - they are just delighted to be tucking into some quality homemade puddings!

Thank you for all the replies.

Ive decided on what to do and excited!
@Nobodydoesitbetter I hear you, but the young instagram folk DO care about what something looks like!

Im happy to prep in advance and chip away at it whilst listening to an audiobook!

Can you revisit with a picture when done?

Banana1979 · 19/10/2023 19:25

100 small Brownies i just wouldn’t be enough for 100 people. It would be a bite each
you would need 300

you are better off making big desserts or bowls - think tray bakes , jelly’s trifles and a tier cake

AppleCottageCores · 24/10/2023 14:43

@Shakenbutbarelystirred yes! Will do.

@Banana1979 Im not making brownies. Making cupcakes instead and they will be substantial. The family dont want a tiered cake (that's my speciality!) I know people have said to do big bowls of puddingand tray bakes but the aesthetics are very important to my niece. Ive sorted my menu and Im excited to carry it out. My 7 year old daughter said to me in the car that my niece is lucky to have me as an aunt. Im not really her aunt, she is my husband's brother's daughter...but we are very close and I thought that was so sweet of my little 7 year old to say that! I hope I can pull it off!! Thank you mumsnetters for all your input!!

Nothing to add as you've already had loads of fab ideas but would love to see some finished pictures of your amazing creations.
