Can Pegasus Swim?

After a bath time with DD and various plastic horses/unicorns/pegasi, it has got me wondering. Can Pegasus Swim? Horses can swim across a lake if needed and I'm pretty sure that unicorns can, but I'm not sure about Pegasus. Would their wings get waterlogged and are they too top heavy to do so?

Loads of aquatic birds, so I don't think presence of feathers is an issue. Surely they'd be tucked up above the waterline?

Avariceagain · 14/10/2023 19:42

Why would they be swimming if they can fly?

EatingCalamari · 14/10/2023 19:49

The ones in Fantasia can.

Well. He was sired by Poseidon, and had power over water - so either yes, very well one would imagine, or he didn't need to as he could order it out of the way! ;-)

Zippedydoodahday · 14/10/2023 19:50

Surely he would just tuck his wings up like a swan and paddle with his horse legs?

Kpo58 · 14/10/2023 19:54

So as long as they keep their wings tucked in they should be ok?

I am thinking that proportionally their wings would need to be bigger than birds of a similar size due to having an extra set of legs compared to birds which could make things more tricky.

He could in Clash of the Titans

I was both mesmerized and really scared by those old claymation Greek myth films.

Love this thread.
Yep pegs can definitely swim! But griffins can't, due to their mismatched legs hth!

Zippedydoodahday · 14/10/2023 20:12

Although presumably their wings don't stop working in a downpour, so perhaps they could just spread them out for additional surface area to help them float.

I suppose it's less of an issue for Griffin's as they tend to come from mountainous and arid places in the middle east. I wonder if some of them hunt fish like eagles do.

Very good point - but you could hypothesise it’s trying to avoid attracting the attention of airborne predators?

Anyway OP I’d assume their wings are naturally water-repellent, like any waterbird’s wings.

What airborne predators are you thinking of?

Dragons?

I would like to see a Pegasus swimming, can anyone find a link?

PatriciaHolm · 14/10/2023 20:36

@KatesLipGloss Harpies?

WolfFoxHare · 14/10/2023 20:49

@KatesLipGloss even a griffin might give a Pegasus cause for concern, but yes, dragons or harpies. Giant eagles?

KnickerlessParsons · 14/10/2023 20:54

Pegasi 😁

What do you call a unicorn/Pegasus mix? (No this isn't the start of a joke!)

A pegacorn?

PizzaPizzaYumYum · 14/10/2023 21:06

My Little Pony says a Pegasi / Unicorn mix is an Alicorn. They have the strong legs of an earth pony, wings of a pegasus and magic of a unicorn.

DD 8 is a fan.

WolfFoxHare · 14/10/2023 21:18

DS and I read Skandar and the Unicorn Thief together recently, and the unicorns in this all have wings as well as horns. All
kinds of wrong.

Davros · 14/10/2023 22:34

@KnickerlessParsons thank you, brilliant (and convincing) picture. Now, does that metal owl get rusty?
