So we literally cannot find an NHS dentist, anywhere

What do we do? Nowhere taking on adults for NHS since we’ve moved. On the website tool it says a few are, but when you call them it transpires they are taking on… for the 5 year long waiting list. People on local Facebook groups are mentioning that some practices are refusing to take on children on the NHS unless their parents are paying privately!

Does anyone know how to get around it? I’ve not seen a dentist in four years since just before COVID, and I know I probably need a filling and who knows what else treatment. I feel embarrassed about my teeth even though they don’t look bad.

I tried this last year when our dentist closed their NHS list. I got nowhere. The website I seem to remember suggests contacting your local ICB (integrated Care Board) who commission NHS services if you can't get fixed up. I did this and received a reply saying that they weren't commissioning any more dentistry and just suggested that I keep trying the dentists on the list.
I ended up staying with our dentist as a private patient (no other option) and pay £15 per month just to stay on their books. For this I also get an annual check up and a hygienist appointment. All treatments are charged at the private rate, I paid £250 for a filling a few months ago. Dread needing a replacement crown, they start at £1200.

Dentistry is now under the control of local ICBs rather than NHS England - have you complained to the ICB locally about the lack of access OP?

I did this and got a bog standard email reply saying that since (2009??) the NHS isn't required to fund dentistry and that I just needed to keep trying the dentists showing as'available' on the website. When I did ring these dentists, I could sense their receptionists' 'eye rolling' as they informed me that I was the umpteenth person to call them and that they needed taking off the website!
I ended up going private.

What is an ICB?

What is an ICB?

Integrated care board. Responsible for commissioning heath care services at a local level. What used to be the CCG / clinical commissioning group.
