Hi all,

im in need of some quick help. Someone has opened a credit card under my name just got statement today. I have called bank. They are investigating. Is there a way to find out if any other account has been open? Or block someone from using any details?

As per your user name there used to be a very orange man in York who ran a company called Card Protection Plan who sold "identity protection insurance" which was supposed to sort this out but the company got in big trouble with regulators as it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on and loads of people were entitled to refunds.

Even they couldn't genuinely sort it out for people, and people were paying them to do it.

Best thing you can do is keep an eye on your Equifax (or similar) report and check that every line of credit on there is something you opened.

Here's what the ICO recommend:

Identity theft

Your identity is one of your most valuable assets. However, criminals can use a number of methods to find out your personal information and will then use it to open bank accounts, take out credit cards and apply for state benefits in your name.

As PP says, check your credit file with someone like Equifax, Credit Karma or Clearscore - I’m subscribed (free) to all of these and check my credit report monthly for anything untoward.

I would also suggest changing any email and financial passwords (bank, credit card, store card) today, to be on the safe side. And make sure passwords are all different!

Have you also checked your passport / driving licence or any other photo ID is still In your possession?

The ICO link above covers all of this too, I’ve just realised - it’s a good link!

@ScoobyDoesnt is clearscore reliable? The others charge £15 but clearscore seems to be free

Clearscore is excellent, Ive used it for years

ScoobyDoesnt · 14/10/2023 12:31

I definitely don’t pay for the others - and Credit Karma is definitely free - see attached from my app.

Clearscore definitely has my balances correct, so it looks reliable to me. The reason I use all 3 is that different providers looks at different credit lines. For example one has my car finance but another doesn’t.
