What's the most spontaneous thing you've done?

I'm not very spontaneous and had only done things like suddenly take the dcs to the beach but this year I booked a holiday abroad when dcs were upset we couldn't go anywhere due to dh's schedule. I thought fuck it and booked something cheap and cheerful without him and it was great!

Id love to hear how spontaneous others are.

Checked where the first flight to Greece is going that day, booked it and within an hour was at the airport. It was Santorini. 🙂

20+ years ago I was standing in an office in Sydney waiting for my friend to finish registering as a physio in NSW. I had done the same thing the week previously.
A bloke came out of a room and shouted down the corridor “anyone here want to work in Broken Hill?”
I said “yeah, why not” thinking Broken Hill was a suburb of Sydney.

Broken Hill is not a suburb of Sydney.

Had the most amazing time and ended up working with the Flying Doctors so I was glad in hindsight I said yes. When my error was revealed to me later I thought my Australian uncle was going to have a cardiac even he was laughing so hard.

Years ago I dabbled in OLD and I had been chatting online/phone to this man who lived a couple of hundred miles away. He seemed a bit reluctant to meet but we kept on talking for well over a year (I'd never do that now!).

Anyway I was away at an event and I knew from having spoken to him the night before, that he was giving a talk at a community fun day.

As I stood on the train platform waiting to get my train home from the festival I'd been to, I suddenly heard his hometown being mentioned over the tannoy, 'the train to X will shortly be arriving at platform 3'.

I'm not normally impulsive but I just thought 'sod it' and I ran to platform 3, bought a ticket on the train (eye wateringly expensive) and went to his town. Looking back now, my next actions were kinda creepy but I actually booked myself into a cheap hotel and the next morning I attended this open air event where he was giving a talk. It was easy to blend into the crowd. I think I just wanted to know if he was who he said he was. There's no way I would have told him I was there and we had only exchanged a couple of photos so not sure he would have recognised me had he even seen me.

I left after the event and got the train home. I never told him what I'd done but then strangely, a couple of weeks later he told me he'd met someone and didn't feel like he could talk to me any more.

With the knowledge I have now, I reckon he was probably married all along (which is why he didn't want to meet) and I reckon the guilt got the better of him so he decided to end it.

I'm still glad I did it though! Cost me about £200 in train/hotel and taxis but I really enjoyed being that spontaneous.

It's great you could be spontaneous OP, and I hope you had a great holiday. How did DH feel about that though? Some people have little control over their schedule, so unless he's a workaholic and refusing to take time off that could have been a little mean.
Writing this as a shift worker who has to fit their holidays around others in the team. We all want the school hols and no one wants mid November for example, but we have to be fair and take the good with the not so good (or just go on holiday in term time-no fines here Grin).

Two days ago my sister and I went out to lunch with a friend she hasn't seen since before covid (they live in different countries). Sister said she was going to Spain in the morning on a 6am flight. Her friend said she'd come too and did!
A friend of mine called me once and said I had one day to decide to fly to New Mexico the following week (2000 mile flight). I went.

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 14/10/2023 09:47

I'm desperate to be more spontaneous but my husband is not.
We've decided to take kids to Blackpool illuminations tonight (2 hour drive). I wanted to go last week when weather was good but DH couldn't make a decision there and then and said next week. I mentioned it yday and he'd forgotten. I've said we're doing it.
The last week of the summer holidays I realised I had a 4 day weekend so booked a caravan holiday with the kids with 4 days notice. The weather was glorious so we spent 2 days on the beach! That's the most spontaneous I've been....I'd love to be the person to jump on a plane, and I love those "we flew to Tenerife for the day!" stories.....problem I have is no money, 3 kids, and a job.

Heard a weather report at around 3pm, saying there would be clear skies. We had just bought a huge telescope, so within an hour, I had booked an Airbnb in Norfolk, rounded up my daughter and granddaughter, and we were on our way to Norfolk.

It was totally worth it. The skies were breathtaking. It did drive home how foolish it was to buy a telescope when we live in a very light polluted area!

Sat in work one Friday morning many years ago (young free & single at the time) talking to a colleague who I knew was off on her hen weekend that afternoon. She mentioned that 2 girls had cancelled the night b4 and asked if myself and another colleague wanted to come - literally got home, shoved a few clothes in a bag and off we went. It was a UK break so no flights to worry about changing. Had a fab time!

Wolfen · 14/10/2023 10:56

Oh these are fab stories. I love the Broken Hill story. Such an amazing experience.

@Coolblur dh was fine with it. Though maybe he was too shocked by my spontaneity to react any other way Grin

I'm just hoping I can be more spontaneous now.

BashfulClam · 14/10/2023 11:06

Booked a holiday on a Thursday night leaving early on the Saturday morning.

Brocollimatilda · 14/10/2023 11:07

Hitchhiked to Paris with a few hours notice.

Sparehair · 14/10/2023 11:11

Entered the Marathon de Sables….. and then actually went through with it. At the time I entered the furthest I had ever run was a half marathon and I had v v little outdoor experience. It was amazing though.

Sparehair · 14/10/2023 11:12

There has been other atuff but tbh some of it just proves that there’s a thin line between spontaneous and idiotic 🤣🤣

Apossum · 14/10/2023 11:16

When I was 18, I was meant to be starting university in a week, sat in the pub on a Saturday night and decided to book a one way flight to New Zealand instead, so that Saturday night out became my leaving do of sorts! Stayed out there for 7 months, had the time of my life and started something as I went back for several seasons thereafter (working in agriculture)
