How long since you’ve been to the dentist?

I’ve put it off for years and buried my head in the sand and been terrified that my teeth are awful. Eventually went today and I need fillings but nowhere near as bad or expensive as I thought. Feel a bit silly now and wish I had gone sooner. Does everyone else go regularly and not do stupid things like this?

I go every six months as do my DC for hygenist clean and dentist check up.

Ihateboris · 13/10/2023 13:43

Every 6 months for a check up and to see the hygienist

TweedTart · 13/10/2023 13:47

I go once a year for a check up and once every 6 months to the hygienist. I hate it with a passion (big wuss + hate being told off like a kid for not flossing every night etc)…but I find if I keep up on top of it, it’s less worse, iyswim!

I go every 9 months, otherwise they throw you off their books.

I'm completely dentist phobic, but make myself go as it's far worse if you don't.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 13/10/2023 13:48

I go once a year.

dutysuite · 13/10/2023 13:50

I used to go every 6 months and every single time I’d have issues afterwards - pain and treatment supposedly needed. I find the staying away keeps me pain free.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 13/10/2023 13:50

Six monthly for the hygienist and annually for a dental checkup.

DelilahBucket · 13/10/2023 13:53

I see a dentist once a year and hygienist twice a year. I keep on top of my teeth hygiene because local anaesthetic doesn't work very well on me so any work would be horrendous.

ladycardamom · 13/10/2023 13:55

Myself and children 6 monthly.

HamBone · 13/10/2023 13:55

Our family goes every six months for a checkup and cleaning. It’s for preventive care so no one ends up with a huge cavity.

Good for you for overcoming your fear, OP, glad it wasn’t too bad in the end. 💐

I recently had to change dentists because my usual one retired and the new dentist was saying things like I needed a bunch of teeth pulled and replaced with implants. He also messed up a filling replacement and I had to go in and have it filed until my bite was correct. I got a second opinion, and this other dentist confirmed my new dentist was crap. So I’ve moved to a different dentist.

Long story short- you probably need a new dentist if you are experiencing pain and there seems to always be something expensive that needs doing.

HamBone · 13/10/2023 14:02

@RedCrossSupporter I had this experience several years ago. Moved to a new area, saw a dentist and was told that I needed multiple fillings in my hitherto unfilled teeth!

I got a second opinion and the second dentist said that I didn’t need any fillings at all….

ohtowinthelottery · 13/10/2023 14:02

We all go every 6 months. We're clinging on to our NHS places so can't afford not to go otherwise we'll be "struck off".

GoldenOldies · 13/10/2023 14:18

I go every 3-4 months for cleanings as I’m prone to build up. I was just in Wednesday having my wisdom teeth removed.

Mavissdaviss · 13/10/2023 14:19

Gah. I am the only one! I hadn’t got around to registering with a dentist as they are so hard to come across but DD is 2 so I’ve been more attentive to dentists accepting NHS patients and finally found one near us.

I don't but the kids do go every 6 months. I have good teeth though. Can't remember the last time I went.

Zingy123 · 13/10/2023 14:21

Two days ago. We go every six months as a family.

Dsautism · 13/10/2023 14:30

I have a massive fear of the dentist.
I had not been for many years. Most of my teeth had crumbled /broken etc. I tried to get things sorted. Dentist who said they were good with nerveres people were not. Vert judgemental which would make me back of for years again.

It's only been since I went private that I have been ok. And managed to get alot done

Parfortheparsnip · 13/10/2023 14:34

Every 6 months for hygiene and dentist. Previous posters are right that it does make the whole thing less crap if you go regularly.
