Just finished The Reckoning on BBC and despite watching countless documentaries, interviews and reading dozens of articles it’s really left me with more questions and intrigue (in a completely disgusted way) than ever.

What a disturbed an complex person he was but I find myself wanting to know why and how he managed to end up the way he was.

In particular his weird and verging on inappropriate views and relationship with his mother…

His dislike and cold view of children…was he a paedophile or someone who was just addicted to sex.

Was there any proof of him actually committing necrophilia or just a rumour..

Did he think his good deeds outweighed his bad or was everything he did done so with ulterior motives?

What was his relationship with the mayor had Ice cream man in Scarborough?

What did locals really think of him..

And how did he manage to worm his way to the top (royalty, politicians, head consultants) from near enough nothing…

How could someone be so narcissistic and a social path but such a loner and never have a wife/partner to mask…

My list of questions is absolutely endless…

Why didn't he pay for sex

Because he enjoyed the sense of control and domination which he exerted over his victims.
Sexual assault and rape are nothing to do with sexual pleasure and everything to do with power and control, and watching victims' fear, terror and distress.

If somebody at the BBC like Terry Wigan said to keep him away from Children in Need what did he know? But what could he do? The dots didn't add up I guess rumours aren't the same as evidence.

But I have always wondered if the lady who fronted crime watch in 1999 had been shot because of looking at this I know her name but I don't think you are allowed to make accusations.

A few police forces also didn't join the dots with each other when people complained and also chose to do nothing.
Being invited to Chequers for Christmas Day he certainly had friends in high places.
The charity work probably stopped people challenging his other behaviour from the 80s onwards.

I feel this drama really doesn't show the reality enough.

@marmaladeandpeanutbutter he had a very hard childhood, suffered significant trauma in a mining accident & it’s possible, re: biography ‘Hiding in Plain Sight’, that he and some other siblings were abused themselves. He was exposed to sex, death and spent time with adults at clubs etc whilst still a child himself.

It's strange as the Louis Theroux documentary showed him in a different light. At times Intriguing, interesting and funny. You can see how people got sucked in by him.

I need to watch that Louis Theroux interview again. I remember watching it at the time and feeling sick. Louis asked him "what do you say about the rumours that you're a paedophile"? Saville replied something like "whether I'm a paedophile or not is for me to know" I was stunned that the creep wasn't arrested after that.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/10/2023 17:57

@Tatslookawful thanks. There is so little known about his father, except that he died at 46. Seems curious Savile said so little about him.

I think that is significant in itself. There was something very strange about the whole family. ----

He said "I know I'm not"

I don't know why I felt like he'd said that. Maybe it's because I thought he was. I've just watched that particular clip back. It's the whole "nobody knows if I am or not" bit that he comes out with before that.

Attitude to management was very different then. Middle or junior managers in organisations would have been less likely to take a complaint upwards, because they wouldn't be believed, or seen as making a fuss. Think about the recent Chester case with the nurse Letby-doctors are quite senior, but when they took it to the top, it was they who got in trouble. The reputation of the organisation was all the most senior cares about. And partly, you can see why, with the way services are now commissioned. It's really critical to look really hard at the motivations of people not seeming to care, as it exposes so much about how we operate as a society.

looking4pup · 17/10/2023 19:41

How many people never met their dad or grandad? Makes you think. Some of his victims must have become pregnant.

I'm not sure but it'll be on You Tube if not, I expect.

looking4pup · 18/10/2023 11:01

@TheShellBeach Yes I've tried that too.

StasisMom · 18/10/2023 16:12

Yes, I have wondered that too... He kept her body for 5 days after she died.

It would have been decomposing by then.
Hmm

StasisMom · 18/10/2023 16:22

Ugh I know... I went to a talk recently about serial killers and, and I will try to keep it this side of revolting, let's say that doesn't bother them. I honestly had no idea. I am yet to watch episode 4 and am dreading the necrophilia part: probably been mentioned before, but Steve Coogan wasn't happy with the way that was originally scripted so it was changed. Sheesh.

beguilingeyes · 18/10/2023 16:38

Men are peculiar aren't they. I know, I know...NAMALT but sheesh.
I just read about Leslie Whittle (Google her) and it may be one of the most awful things I've ever heard about. That poor, poor girl.

This.
Managers not doing their job.
That poor porter and the nurses whistleblowing and getting nowhere makes me so angry.
I think that managers need to be accountable for their inactions. I really hope that Cheshire Police succeed in bringing the managers at the Countess of Chester to justice.

That Louis Theroux film "Savile" is on iPlayer.
I don't mean the original documentary, I mean the film he made later.

Brand's under investigation, Epstein died in prison, Weinstein is in prison. They were powerful and famous but I don't think they ultimately got away with it. It took a while but eventually it caught up with them.

I think it was easier for these sort of men to go unchallenged in the 70s/80s but I don't think enough has changed. Epstein and Maxwell were (eventually) charged and convicted but what about all the other people who at best turned a blind eye to what was happening? If we, as a society, were really serious about stopping sexual assault and exploitation there would have been a proper investigation in to everyone who attended their 'parties' etc.

Watching this Saville drama made me wonder how many other men he mixed with who did similar things. We know that 2 of his friends were sex offenders but how many others have just not been found out? It comes across in the drama that these 3 (at least) discussed what they were doing as if it was perfectly normal and that probably helped them convince themselves that they were doing nothing wrong. The scene where the younger man quotes back to Saville his comment along the lines of 'if they don't show you their birth certificate how are you to know' made me feel sick.

catbla2957 · 19/10/2023 16:00

I have just watched Louis meet jimmy and then the follow up documentary. Really chilling watch. He was so good at playing the clown and could never be pinned down on an answer to any question.

LizzieSiddal · 19/10/2023 17:15

I can’t watch the programme as he always turned my stomach, even as a child watching Jim’ll Fix It.

My grandfather knew him through long distance running club, he hated Saville and would tell his daughters never to go any where him.
