Weston Super Mare and surrounding areas

I have a day to spend around Weston Super Mare later this month, with DC11 and a dog.

Any recommendations of what we can do?

It's just a stop on the way down to Cornwall, so Burnham is about as far south as we'd want to go.

Why not stop off sooner and got to NT Tyntesfield or Noah’s Ark Zoo. Think it’s J17.

Weston doesn’t have much going for it. Especially this time of year.

I love Weston out of season - I would take the chance to soak up the air of desolation, and probably take a decent camera with me to photograph it!

Nearby Clevedon is prettier and if you are hardy, has a sea pool.

Are you looking for dog walks etc.

brean down is a nice walk, we’ve also walked up Brent knoll which definitely benefits from e-dog pulling you up.

or you could look around the Stroud area, dogs adore rodborough and selsley common. Loads of dog friendly pubs and places like Stroud and nailsworth have lots of dog friendly places.

Brean Down. Great beach, cliffs and a fort.

KenAdams · 12/10/2023 21:17

Anything we can do with a dog really. Those walks sound great and Brean Down sounds right up our alley!

Nature reserve at break is lovely but not sure if it's dog friendly as haven't been with ddog. If weather is bad, Portishead is very dog friendly, nearly all the shops and cafes let them in.

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 12/10/2023 21:19

Uphill is nice: www.visit-westonsupermare.com/things-to-do/uphill-nature-reserve-p1541633

Another vote for Brean.

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/10/2023 21:22

Weston is very dog friendly so you'll have no trouble finding somewhere to eat. I like the Brunello Lounge on the front.
Lots of lovely walks in the area too.

If you want more rural, head to Brent Knoll or Cheddar.

YewandOak · 12/10/2023 21:25

I live in W-s-M.

Brean Down is lovely but please keep your dog on their lead.Uphill up by the old church is nice but sometimes there are cattle up there which your dog may not be happy with. The woods are gorgeous for walks too. As is SandBay.

YewandOak · 12/10/2023 21:27

Or a walk along the Strawberry Line at Yatton. There's a lovely dog friendly cafe there that does a cracking bacon butty and doggy ice cream😉

VitaminX · 12/10/2023 21:51

Sand Point. Easier to get to than Brean Down and while a bit less dramatic still a lovely walk.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 12/10/2023 23:00

I would have thought the Sand Point walk was a bit tricky with a dog?

VitaminX · 13/10/2023 00:53

What would be tricky? I grew up near there and we took the dogs up there regularly. Still do when I'm visiting my parents. There are always lots of dog walkers there in my experience.

Not tricky at all,I used to take my old dog up there quite a bit.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 13/10/2023 06:31

Not a dog owner but was just thinking steep drops?

VitaminX · 13/10/2023 09:45

I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but I've never been worried that any dog I was with would accidentally fall off a cliff. They are much more sensible than children in that respect.

mindutopia · 13/10/2023 09:51

Are you committed to it being coastal? I think Weston is a bit grim and even the beaches aren't fantastic around there. If you're heading to Cornwall, you'll have lovely beaches. I'd be inclined to go the other direction to the Mendips. Lots of lovely dog walks and villages. You could go to Cheddar and do Cheddar gorge if you want a proper day out (though probably not with a dog in tow, but the village is still interesting and lots of shops/cafes).

WorriedMillie · 13/10/2023 09:53

Another vote for Clevedon. ❤️
