A Small Life

Anyone seen it tonight screened at the cinema? I saw it tonight and feel genuinely harrowed. Other people left the cinema seemingly emotionally in one piece and laughing and talking like normal. I feel like it's too in my head to sleep

A Little Life? I saw it at the theatre and hated it. There was a thread on here when it first came out with some very mixed views and reviews!

What did you think op?

Artinsurance · 12/10/2023 00:08

One of our friends told us he left the film because it was so disturbing..

CrochetCuddles · 12/10/2023 00:12

I've seen the trigger warnings for the book, if the film has the same ones then it's one I'll be skipping.

I did contemplate of o could handle the second half given I needed wine at the interval but I stayed
Enjoy is a weird word but it was very well acted I thought, hard hitting and very direct. It was like a hard kick to the gut.

Yes the trigger warnings apply. There was a warning on the door and at the start. But I don't learn. I love Prima Facie but my God it took it out of me

I tried to get to a screening last week, but it was cancelled due to tech issues at the cinema. Gutted.
I read the book years ago, and still haven't quite recovered to be honest.

Gizlotsmum · 12/10/2023 14:39

Not seen the film but saw the show. It was a very quiet interval and it took me a good few days to process it…amazing and so glad I got to see it

SleepingStandingUp · 12/10/2023 15:01

Did you see it at the little theatre where it was filmed for cinema? Yes that feels like a more reasonable response that to immediately jump and be laughing and joking about life.

I just told my Mom I don't think my husband adores me the way Willem does Jude. The way he looked at him in that second half ♥️

I was engrossed the whole way through. Yes it was harrowing but I agree Willem and Jude were wonderful, Willem adored him. How James Norton in particular did that for almost four hours I don’t know . So moving, I certainly wasn’t laughing afterwards.
I really enjoyed it, if that is the right word.

xogossipgirlxo · 12/10/2023 16:25

Wow, didn’t know there was a movie, I read a book though. Sometimes I wanted to throw kindle out the window I was so upset.

I wish the screening I went to had been cancelled. Tech issues started 20 minutes into the second half and caused a half hour delay. Consequently I had to leave before the end in order to catch the last bus home. However I knew how it ends and wasn't sorry to miss that.
A very hard watch. James Norton was brilliant though.

RedWhiteRed · 12/10/2023 16:50

Is there a movie made too?

Must admit, A Little Life totally ripped my heart and soul out. I read it once and haven’t picked it up again because I don’t want to feel like a emotional wreck again. But it’s a brilliant brilliant book.

minipie · 12/10/2023 16:55

I read the book and hated it. Misery porn. Create a totally non believable perfect character (who discovers a new amazing skill every few chapters) and then pile abuse on him. WTF.

Iamblossom · 12/10/2023 17:03

I thought the screening of the play was even better than the book and I didn't believe that was possible

Phenomenal. And all the actors were immense.

Gizlotsmum · 12/10/2023 21:44

We were at one of the performances they filmed :)
