If you bounce out of bed at 6/6.30....

What time do you go to bed? How do you manage if you have any health conditions?

I'm exhausted. Struggle every morning. Have had a bad habit if stating up roo late (stress related, and also child free time, single parent).

But even with going to bed earlier I'm still exhausted. Every morning my alarms goes off at 6.30 and most days I struggle out if bed an hour later. And rush. And be late.

To add, I have anaemia and hypothyroidism. I'm also overweight.

do you need to go to work?
how do you manage if you fall back to sleep?

my phone alarm goes off every minute, on a just in case basis.

Lumie light in darker months from 6:30.
Radio from 6:45
Get up after the 7am news.
Magnesium glycinate tablets at bed time have improved my sleep quality and helped a lot.

Nothankyou22 · 12/10/2023 07:09

I have insomnia and fall asleep anywhere between 11pm-1am sometimes majority of the time I wake in the night multiple times too but I have no choice to get up at 6.30 so just do it, some days I fall asleep early and up at 5 so lay in bed for the hour.
Tbf i assumed it was because I used to do shift work but recently contacted my GP for help because by 9am I’m yawning most days and it’s been going on years now

Bemyclementine · 12/10/2023 08:16

@MyCircumference yes I do work, and have to get children to school. I snooze the alarm so I do generally get up just in time but then it's a big rush to get me and dc ready.

I'd considered a lumie but given that I seem able to sleep in the full glare of the "big light" I'm not sure how effective it would be. Radio might help though, I'll try that.

@Bemyclementine I used to really struggle getting up in the mornings too but now wake up before my alarm!

I think this is down to a few factors - I was also diagnosed with hypothyroid which is now well managed with levo. I also take vitamin D and gentle iron with b12 which I take at night to avoid interaction with the levo which I take in the morning.

I am quite rigid with bedtime now - start getting ready for bed at 10pm and sun to be asleep by 10:30pm.

I don't stick to this at weekends but often find now I wake up early then too because my body is used to it.

By all means I don't bounce out of bed though, I doom scroll on my phone usually from 6-6:30am 🙈 but I used to be the person who snoozed for hours on end and couldn't get up at all!

Deffo perisist with GP to get levels checked and I'd push for vitamin levels too to see if their are any issues that need addressed!

I get up for 6 so I can get some jobs done before work or go to the the gym to save me having to go in the evenings. At first I really struggled but I think my body is used to it now. I'm not one for going to bed late, I usually go up for around 10, brush my teeth, do my skin routine so I'd say I'm usually in bed around half 10 ish.

I also have an underactive thyroid and type 1 diabetes. Have you been to have your bloods checked recently to make sure you're on the correct dose? Whenever my thyroid has dipped a little lower I struggle to keep my weight in check and get very tired but after my medication has been adjusted my weight and the tiredness are okay. Maybe it's worth booking a check up with your GP just to make sure your levels are okay?

Also, I know it's tempting to stay up a little later on a weekend or have a lie in but I've found if I get up relatively early-ish say around 8 it's not so hard to get back into the routine of waking up earlier in the week.

If you are tired and need more sleep why do you set the alarm for earlier than you actually need? I don’t get this. Set the alarm for the time you need to get up. Get up. You’ll get extra sleep.

Bemyclementine · 12/10/2023 16:27

@thehurtingheart what iron do you take? That's something I need to sort out.

@cardibach I set my alarm for when I need to get up. I'm exhausted though, and it's not a case of "alarm goes off, get up".

No you don’t. Because even getting up an hour later you make it (maybe fractionally late, but not an hour late). It is that simple. However tired you are, get up. Staying in bed doesn’t help the tiredness if you aren’t in proper deep sleep - which you aren’t.

Bemyclementine · 12/10/2023 16:46

@cardibach please don't try to tell me about my own life. If you have nothing actually helpful to say, dont bother saying anything

OP posts:
cardibach · 12/10/2023 16:56

I’m trying to help @Bemyclementine
Im trying to show you how to get extra time actually asleep instead of half awake feeling shit but not getting rest. But ok. Carry on. It’s working so well for you.

Bemyclementine · 12/10/2023 17:08

It's not really helpful though. I'm not dozing. I'm falling back into full sleep, even in a brightly lit room. Then my alarm goes again and I feel like I've been dragged from the depths. I have tried setting my alarm later, the same thing happens, only later.

I've never been able to nap, but the past 6 months, if I was to lay down, or even sit on the sofa in the middle of the day, I fall asleep. People at work comment on how much I'm yawning.

OP the best thing you can do is force yourself up as soon as your alarm goes off, plug your phone in on the other side of the room if you have to so that you physically have to get out of bed to turn it off, and then do not go back to bed. Move your body in some way straight away whether that’s a little home workout, a walk, a run, something like that really will wake you up, so will a glass of cold water.

I know it’s not easy, I’m pregnant and the exhaustion has been extreme but once you start a routine of getting up at x oclock, and it’s an absolute routine it just becomes a fact. Alarm goes off, I get up, I exercise. There’s no thinking involved, it’s just a fact, you need to reframe this in your mind so that you don’t even see snoozing/laying back down etc as a possibility.

Lovelynames123 · 12/10/2023 17:24

Half the week I get up at 4.15 for work, in work for 5. I'm in bed no later than 9.30, asleep by 10. The rest of the week I'm up at 6.15, in bed by 10.30, asleep 11.

I've always been an early bird though, never lazed in bed as a teenager and even now on the rare weekends I'm off I consider 8am a lie in! Occasionally I'll have an afternoon nana nap, or if I'm watching a movie with the dc I nap, but generally I keep going. I run my own business so always have a weekend or holiday booked where I know I can switch off and completely relax

Lovelynames123 · 12/10/2023 17:26

And the very first thing I do when I wake up is wordle, kick starts my brain into gear! I also have all my clothes ready for the next day before I go to bed

MyCircumference · 12/10/2023 18:38

another thing, i have to set my alarm at the other side of the room, rather than next to me

SeasonalWitch · 12/10/2023 18:53

It’s all about the first few seconds after the alarm goes off.

If you let your mind think about how tired you are and how much you need to go back to sleep, it’ll be a struggle.

You’ve got to get those feet on the floor, turn on the lights and get moving on autopilot, without engaging your brain. There is no other way.

It’ll be hard and forced and horrible for a few days, but it gets easier pretty quickly. And once you can feel it getting easier, it then suddenly becomes a breeze.

Strange but true.

JustAMinutePleass · 12/10/2023 18:58

I have Hashimotos. I need to be in bed by 6 when I need to wake at 4 & even then I’m tired and groggy. I think it’s the low blood pressure - Walking helps wake me up

lucertola28 · 12/10/2023 19:11

I also have hypothyroidism (well I have Graves Disease which causes hyperthyroidism, that got treated with meds, was then 'better' for a few years but basically the Graves Disease is an autoimmune condition which basically kept destroying my thyroid so now I have hypothyroidism and on eltroxin for that), and depression and anxiety which I take meds for. Also have M.E./CFS [this diagnosis preceded the Graves Disease] which is kind of in remission, I think the other meds help it, but I never have super high energy levels.

I have to get up before 6:50am, preferably by 6:40am. I have found wearing a fitbit and using 'smart wake' helps me wake up in better part of sleep cycle so it is less with a sudden startle, it just vibrates on wrist which seems to work for me. I do set alarm on phone as back up just in case.

I do have to hop straight out of bed, I'm ok with this now but I do remember having to put alarm clock way out of reach some years ago or I'd just hit snooze or off and then sleep it out and be late.

Ideally for me I need to aim to go to sleep between 10pm and 10:30pm. I've been very out of sync last couple weeks though, thanks to some post covid effects from when I had it about 3-4 weeks ago. 2nd time I've had covid it was more intense but shorter this time. Feeling the effects still though.

I find best things that help me generally is good consistent sleep schedule, healthy diet and regular exercise but also chill out days

Bemyclementine · 12/10/2023 19:48

@lucertola28 I did use the smart wake option on my fitbit for years, I started when the dc were babies snd I didn't want to wake them . Now though, I sleep through it

I probably would have done that too in previous years. Maybe if you get a cheap little travel alarm clock and put by bedroom door or something similar. Hope you find something to help you.

newyear2023newmeihope · 12/10/2023 20:02

@Bemyclementine I am exactly the same and I also have hypothyroidism and anaemia.. I could sleep for 15 hours and still wake up exhausted. I can't even explain to someone how exhausted I am all the time and waking up early is the hardest part.

Bemyclementine · 12/10/2023 20:55

@newyear2023newmeihope thank you for understanding. I've never struggled to get up. Sorry you're going through the same!
