What time do you go to bed? How do you manage if you have any health conditions?

I'm exhausted. Struggle every morning. Have had a bad habit if stating up roo late (stress related, and also child free time, single parent).

But even with going to bed earlier I'm still exhausted. Every morning my alarms goes off at 6.30 and most days I struggle out if bed an hour later. And rush. And be late.

To add, I have anaemia and hypothyroidism. I'm also overweight.

Bed at 11.30 and up at 6.30.
It helps having two wfh days where I can get an extra hour and a half sleep

@RenegadeKeeblerElf

What time do you get up to exercise?!

Does your partner come to bed at the same time?

Usually get up around 6.30 ish, either go for a 30min run then leave for work around 7.45, or leave the house at 6.45 and do a 30min swim on the way to work, start at 8am. I'm lucky that I don't have a long commute, and don't need to allow time for breakfast as I eat at my desk when I get there. DH sometimes goes up at the same time as me, sometimes earlier, sometimes later (he works shifts so can start as early as 6.30am and finish as late as 9.30pm).

I never used to be a morning person but managed to get into a great routine over the last 3 years: I have been going up to bed at 9pm, alarm is typically at 5am as 3 days a week I go for a run 5:30-6:30 or if not a run I go to the gym or do a home workout, basically always an hour of some form of exercise. Then when I’m back at 6:30 a nice hot shower, and because I have been awake awhile and exercised I then am more motivated to make myself a nice fresh breakfast, I love smoothie bowls or scrambled eggs with kale etc. Basically an hour of exercise, a hot shower, and a good nutritious breakfast before 7am, rather than rolling out of bed at 6:30, stumbling into the shower and then pouring a bowl of coco pops, or worse skipping breakfast.

I’m currently pregnant and although I’ve stopped running due to pelvic pain, I’ve managed to keep this up so far, despite being extra tired some days I never feel worse for getting up, moving my body a bit (even if at the moment thats just some stretching!) and then a hot shower and good breakfast.

Gymmum82 · 11/10/2023 18:19

I get up at 5.30. In bed by 10. Asleep by 10.30. I get up and go to the gym which wakes me up for the day

AmazingSnakeHead · 11/10/2023 18:21

No health conditions, but I drink A LOT of coffee and can be pretty bouncy.

Delpf · 11/10/2023 18:25

I crawl out of bed at 05:45. Try to be in bed by 10:30.

I have noticed that whenever I'm very physically active (spending 5+ hours a day exercising) I need way less sleep - often I will have less than 5 hours a night and will be totally fine, not tired at all. I think it's work/screens/being sedentary that makes us (or me, at least) tired. Or maybe the sleep you get after enormous physical exertion is qualitatively superior to the sleep you get after a day in the office, so you need less of it. 🤔

user1483387154 · 11/10/2023 18:31

I bounce or crawl out of bed at anytime between 3 am and 5 am in winter. Is it a choice? no this is when my son wakes up and on an average day I am lucky
to get 4 hours sleep per night and that is interupted. There is no liency

being late? I have no choice. School entry is at 07:30 here , lateness is just not tolerated

Needeyebrows · 11/10/2023 18:32

I regularly wake and get up at 5.30am, have always been an early riser. I am however in bed before 10pm everynight.

Not unusual for me to head to bed at 8pm and read. I love my bed.

I totally agree with this. I have far more energy now I am exercising more. And nothing like 5 hours - even just half an hour makes a difference

I used to be a real night-owl but these days I dutifully get up at 6.30 every morning with no drama. I do a lot of stuff that's already been mentioned:

Start running a bath around 9.45 to 10.00
In bed ready to sleep at 10.30. No phones or reading in bed, we just have a bit of chit chat while we drift off
Get straight out of bed as soon as I wake if it's after 6.00am. I used to have my alarm clock on the other side of the room to force me to get out of bed, but these days I always wake up before it and get straight up. An extra 10 mins in bed is never worth it.
Try and not mess up my routine too much at the weekends. I'll only stay up after 11.30 for a good reason, and always get up before 8. If I really want the extra sleep I'll have a little afternoon nap rather than a lie-in.
Lots of walking.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/10/2023 18:41

I do 'bounce' but mainly because I exercise at 6 am daily & love it so that's my motivation (I used to have 1 day off - would have to drag myself up, 90 minutes later).

I'm currently getting up at 445 or so, prep kids / stuff for day, out the door by 545, exercise at 6, work by 730.

However, like another poster it's quality not quantity of sleep; I don't sleep enough, overall but since HRT, the quality is massively improved.

All that said, I am a single parent with a very busy job, and very busy kids. I think I run on adrenalin during the week. I am often shattered on Saturdays in particular.

Definitely for me it's the motivation of my exercise, also the right deadline meaning I have to move rapidly. Naturally I'm a terrible dawdled.

namechangeluckylady · 11/10/2023 18:55

If I'm in bed by 9pm then I'm OK to get up from 5:30am. Has to be a routine thing though, you get used to it.

My husband always feels better when he gets up before 6, if he sleeps any later then he feels groggy when he wakes up. Maybe try an earlier bed and earlier wake up, you might find a sweet spot.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 11/10/2023 19:01

From early evening turn your screen brightness right down and make sure your blue light filter is on. I do the reverse in the morning and blast my eyes with the phone screen as bright as it will go.
Whatever time you are going to bed, make it much earlier.

Pumpkinspie · 11/10/2023 19:05

I wake up naturally around 5.30am, get up around 5.45am weekdays and around 6-6.30 on weekends. I go up to bed at around 10pm, faff around for 30 mins getting ready, then read till around 11pm then lights off. Probably average 6.5-7hours sleep which is enough for me

HashBrownandBeans · 11/10/2023 19:08

I’m already at work by then 😫 and I’m a night owl by nature. It’s taken me four years to train myself to get to sleep by ten pm.

awaynboilyurheid · 11/10/2023 19:10

There is no tired like thyroid tired! I feel your pain and it’s well documented the mornings are the hardest, till the medication slowly kicks in. I’ve done busy nursing night shifts and then stayed up all day looking after children, and did a degree while working full time etc etc and hypothyroidism floored me energy wise like nothing else. When your thyroid isn’t producing thyroxine it causes so many symptoms but one of the main ones is chronic fatigue. I would get your thyroid levels, B 12, ferritin all in the upper third of the so called normal ranges. Look at TPA UK , a thyroid patient advocacy website, they have good information on thyroid conditions.

Poniesandrainbows · 11/10/2023 19:19

I get up at 6am and lights out at 11pm.

Boxofsockss · 11/10/2023 19:19

I get up at 4.45. This is solely motivated by the fact that the earlier I start work, the earlier I can finish so I have to be up at this time to work 6-2. Coffee for me is a must.

On a good night I’m starting to get ready for bed at 8pm (in bed for 8.30). I don’t tend to stay up past 9pm generally.

greglet · 11/10/2023 19:19

I get woken by 16 month old DS any time between 5.30 and 6.15. If it's after 6, that feels acceptable. Anything earlier is grim.

I usually go to bed between 8.30 and 9.30 - if it's earlier then I'll read for a while. Lights out between 9 and 9.30.

I made it till 11pm on Saturday (went out) but had to have a nap on Sunday 😂 I need eight hours to function, so 9ish works for me if I know I’m going to be up at any time from 5.30.

WolfFoxHare · 11/10/2023 19:24

I have B12 deficiency and am overweight and menopausal. I am a naturally early riser and even at the weekend rarely sleep past 7am. Once the alarm goes off, I can’t go back to sleep, I just wouldn’t drift back off. I go to bed soon after 10pm. I feel tired most of the time, but my body clock is set to a 6.30ish wake up, so mornings aren’t too hideous for me. I never socialise past about 8pm though!

buckingmad · 11/10/2023 19:28

My alarm has gone off between 5-6:30 every day for the last few years depending on work/my horses routine/covid.

I am in bed by 10 and asleep not long after. Was pretty knackering when toddler was waking up during the night but we coslept so I got back to sleep pretty quickly. I’ve also had a period of anaemia when pregnant and that definitely adds a new layer of exhaustion!

I guess having something I have to get out of bed for helps. My horse needs sorting before work so I can’t snooze my alarm. Also I’ve previously had one of those lumie alarm clocks which can help naturally wake you

ComeOnThenFanny · 11/10/2023 20:42

I get up very reluctantly at 0600 as I start work at 0800 (wfh), and I have to have enough time to potter around and come to. I sort the dogs out, put a wash on, have a shower and make coffee and breakfast in time for work.
In an ideal world, I'm in bed for 10pm and asleep by 1030, if I'm still awake after 11pm, I'm like a bear with a sore head for most of the day.

This thread is making me tired! And it's fresh bed night too 🎉 Can't wait for bedtime 😁

ComeOnThenFanny · 11/10/2023 20:44

That being said, I am an old raver, so a few times a year I pull an all-nighter, but it takes me about a week to get over it these days.

Gnomegnomegnome · 11/10/2023 20:47

I’m up at 5 for the gym.
The only way that I can do it is a good night time routine. Bed by ten.
Two alarms, one bird song and one horrible one. As soon as the alarm goes off I am straight up and dressed. Black coffee and ready to go.
