I'm off work at the moment with a sickness bug. I've just got a text from one of my colleagues asking if I can do a shift on Saturday. (My next and last shift this week is on Friday, and I don't know if I'll be well enough to do that one yet!) This colleague is someone I've never given my phone number to, so one of the managers has given it to him. (Feeling extra annoyed because said text woke me up, although he wasn't to know I was asleep.)

There's two issues at play here.

Firstly it's a GDPR breach, you need to complain to your manager and ask for them to investigate how the colleague got your phone number. If work gave your number out then it's serious.

Secondly, it's not appropriate for the colleague to contact you while your sick, but did they actually know you were off sick? If they were unaware then this would be forgiveable, if not then it would constitute harassment.

Where I work the managers are only allowed to contact you during sick leave if it's to discuss your progress or plan for your return to work. We also only give out of numbers to senior managers for those purposes not direct line managers.

Thank you, that's good to know. I was wondering about the GDPR element, especially as we're so hot on it with regards to our customers.

There's not many people where I work, and someone being off sick is noticeable. The management all have our phone numbers, but I've never given mine to my other colleagues, because I don't want to talk to them outside of work!

No one has contacted me with regards to my sick leave, but it hasn't yet been a week, so that's maybe why. I wasn't expecting to be off this long.
