Checking into a flight at the airport not online

Looking for some mumsnet wisdom....DH & I have booked a last minute family holiday next week. We can't check in online (as it is so last minute) so will be checking in at the airport.

The flight is super early in the morning. Can my husband go to the airport himself to check all 4 of us (me, DH, two kids) in? Or do all 4 of us need to be there for check in?

I'm just thinking of ways to cut down on airport time (and avoid having to wake the kids - and me! - up any earlier than necessary)

This may well be a ridiculous query but I genuinely can't remember the in person check in process as the past few times we've been away everything has been done online! Obviously I know he can't go through security or anything but if he can check us all in without the rest of us physically being there that would be handy.

No you all need to be there to check in.

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 09/10/2023 21:09

No. You have to be there.
Who are you flying with?
Make sure they don't charge you for checking In at the desk (ryanair I'm looking at you)

SisterMichaelsHabit · 09/10/2023 21:11

I don't understand how you'll all be there in time for the flight if you're not all there to do check in. Usually it closes 30-45 mins before the flight departs. That's about enough time to get across the airport to gate seventy million.

Also how will you all travel there? Surely you're all going in the same car/taxi/bus/train?

I just can't see how this would be remotely practical, sorry.

How far away from the airport do you live?

Polkadotsaplenty · 09/10/2023 21:13

If it's not until next week you should be able to check in now online? Tbh jet2 have been great when we've been. Super organised and tonnes of staff so you'll be fine
Just take kids in pjs of young and get changed while there. They may sleep on plane

SisterMichaelsHabit · 09/10/2023 21:14

Nap on the plane? It's not ideal but depending on the length of the flight it can be restful. A bigger worry with an outbound flight at that time would be what you're going to do in the hours and hours between flight landing and hotel check-in opening unless it's long-haul and you're actually arriving in mid-afternoon?

Theoldwoman · 09/10/2023 21:15

6:50am! I thought you meant early like 5am.

We have just flown overseas and checked in at the airport. You will all need to be there.

DaphneMoo · 09/10/2023 21:15

I've just had to check in at the airport and the airline wouldn't let me do this anymore than 2 hrs before departure so not sure how even if only one of you could do so it would help

Cannas · 09/10/2023 21:18

I don't understand why you can't check in online as Jet2 useally let you do this until 24 hours before.
Jet2 also do twilight bag drop. One of the party can drop the luggage the night before, we've done this and stayed in an airport hotel.

saveforthat · 09/10/2023 21:19

I don't understand why you can't check in online. Quite often you can't check in (on line) until 48 hours before.

gotomomo · 09/10/2023 21:21

Check and see if your airport has twilight bag drop. Also most airlines require you to upload the advanced passenger information at least 24 hours in advance so why not just check in too?

Doublebubblegum · 09/10/2023 21:22

Well the long story is we booked the holiday but couldn't book any seats on the plane as all they have left to pre book are extra legroom seats that they only allow adults to sit in. So although we were happy to pay to select seats, the system won't allow it.

So my husband called to make the booking over the phone and they have said they will give us seats together when we check in, just to get to check in as soon as it opens so the seats will be guaranteed.

But I've just checked and they say check in opens 3.5 hours before the flight. So half 3 in the morning ish. Which is obviously crazy as I'd like to avoid us all hanging about an airport for 3.5 hours 😬

We are staying in a hotel close to the airport so easy for us to make two journeys. But sounds like that's not going to be possible so looks like it'll be a very early start for us all!!

So we physically cannot check in online! As there are no seats for us to check in to

Well, the only other option is for you to check in then come back for a snooze, not sure if that's feasible.

Soontobe60 · 09/10/2023 21:34

I’m not sure how they can guarantee that you’ll all be sat together when all the available seats have been allocated? It would mean having to move other passengers who presumably have paid extra to pre select their seats.

UmmmBop · 09/10/2023 22:07

I imagine they mean that the children will have an adult either next to them or in front/behind as per the rules, not that they will all get seats next to one another.
