Top Boy..... Opinions

So i just binged Top Boy!

I have surprised myself lately with what i've been watching, totally different to the usual 'boring/mind numbing/no thought needed' l was accustomed to watching.

Anyway, so Top Boy... Amazing series, bloody loved it and all the time thinking that these 'gangs' actually exist and that is how they are, blew my mind...

Without giving anything away about the ending for those who haven't seen it (YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD) - i was soooooo disappointed with the last episode.

Yeah the last series wasn't great, a few erm wtf moments, like why would jac do that Confused, the whole dushane profiting from the gentrification seemed to be pointless and come to nought. Could have done with a couple of extra episodes.

TibetanTerrah · 09/10/2023 05:47

I've watched it all before but introduced DM to it while I'm staying with her. She's hooked. We're three episodes from the end.

The last season was rushed with a lot of subplots from S4 just ignored completely. For such a big show where people were invested in the final season, I'll never understand why they crammed everything into 6 episodes instead of 8 or 10 like the last two.

It also occurred to me that it didn't have to end, even if some actors wanted to go onto other things. That's the nature of the life, the gangs and their leaders constantly die change and someone else takes over. And if (trying not to give spoilers) they hadn't killed off the big death at the end of S4, that storyline could have run and run, constant scheming and plotting between the two of them trying to get rid of the other one.

The first two series when it was on Channel 4 were absolutely amazing. I think it went downhill when Netflix took over tbh.

Don’t even get me started on the last series? I have no clue why everything was so rushed. A lot of things didn’t make sense so they could have taken their time with things. Still a great show!

SunshineAndFizz · 09/10/2023 10:50

Hmm trying not to spoil anything, but who do you think it was?

SarahBeara1 · 09/10/2023 11:42

@SunshineAndFizz

I have no idea.
Someone who knew he was going to be there at that moment ...

I think Jac

I think Si. He had Stef's back and could've followed him. There were a few scenes where he was checking it was definitely Sully, like he was going to make a move.

They murdered half the estate and seemed like there was never an investigation. Multiple murders with the same weapons just seemed strange it took so long to come round and bite everyone in the arse.

I also worry about young teens watching it. I think it's fine for adults but impressionable teens it glorifies violence and selling drugs, in this day and age with the amount of murders of young people by young people it's not needed. I worry about the desensitisation of shootings and stabbings to these young people. I caught my 13 year old step son consistently trying to watch it at my house as it's so easily accessible on Netflix (his mother allows it) I'm dead against it. Things are already bad enough for young people and it's a harsh reality where we live. She doesn't seem to see it as a problem and also lacks understanding of the severity that is knife crime. We live in different areas and can't seem to get through to her that it's a real problem especially where we live more so than where she does. we don't just read about it in the news we drive past the flowers.

OnAir · 09/10/2023 12:09

I also think it was jac.

qwerty123454 · 09/10/2023 12:22

Do we know that DuShane is 100% dead?

Plot twist

GreenEyedGiant · 09/10/2023 12:51

I think it was Jac too. She knew she was dead once Sully got her so it's the only way she could stick around and raise the baby so it needed done.

Plus yeah, we didn't exactly see that DuShane was dead dead.

I didn't mind the ending too much. It has to end somewhere and a lot of these shows keep churning out season after season when it's so popular but that's how they ruin it.

SunshineAndFizz · 09/10/2023 10:50

Hmm trying not to spoil anything, but who do you think it was?

The point is that it could have been multiple people, and that who did it was irrelevant. There is always going to be a 'top boy', there is always going to be people after the 'top boy' be it out of revenge or to overthrow them, and there will always be another 'top boy' once the last has gone who will eventually be marked and face the same demise. It's a cycle, and that's what the programme was there to demonstrate.

TibetanTerrah · 09/10/2023 13:06

@Ankerdam they did actually write a reveal into the episode but decided to take it out.

Steev · 09/10/2023 13:58

It was Jac imo

BeggyMitchell · 09/10/2023 17:36

I wanted Jac to take over - she still might given another series.

SarahBeara1 · 09/10/2023 20:35

Jac has the baby now, I doubt she'd be taking over.

Could it have been Jacs girlfriend?

Dushane was definitely dead, bled out after being shot in the side. If he wasn't dead he would have fought for the 'food'...

I've only watched S1-3 so far and think it's brilliant. I live in area not dissimilar to Hackney and like the subtle humour that gives it authenticity. That said not watched S4-5 yet and I know they are more controversial...
