The joys of living in a terraced house

We have lived on our street for nearly four years. Our neighbours are generally alright however, some leave a bit to be desired:

Neighbour 1: has bought traffic cones to block off room outside his house-someone challenged him as it's just your bog-standard road-he shouted at them and said he was told by his landlord that the public road would be his ConfusedGrin. He now takes the cones in to his house when he's parked there (they belong the council who left them there by mistake!) so I can't hide them/bin them/take them to the tip.
Neighbour 2: quietly running a car refurb business by cover of darkness. They have a big dog which barks alll the time and keeps us all awake.
Neighbour 3: shouts at her kids but then is as nice as pie in public
Neighbour 4: is a lady of the night with a verry explicit website.

For reference: I live in a small naice village with a seemingly odd underbelly. I thought i was moving somewhere quaint after years in urban city living GrinConfused

We're in a terrace which is generally pretty soundproof, but we did have to ask one neighbour if they could practice piano an hour earlier as it was around our son's bedtime and he couldn't get to sleep - luckily they were very nice about it and started earlier.

WeeGoddess · 08/10/2023 21:16

Feel yer pain.
I live in the middle of a row of 5 terraced houses which backs on to a row of 5.
Neighbours on my rooms side have 3 dogs and are never done slamming the back door open and closed. The halls adjoining side are like gangsters, parties, shouting, clinking, police outside 😳
The house that backs on to mine has turned the kitchen in to huge car showroom style extension so I never feel I have privacy upstairs. They're always in their glass extension making me feel like an exhibitionist!!

It all a bit stifling

BingBunnyBlues · 08/10/2023 21:18

I had a neighbour whose every piss and phlegm-hawk I could hear through the paper thin party wall. Sadly he also played the trombone so I had that pleasure too. I sold up after 18 months cos I couldn't stand it anymore. Thank God it was a rising housing market.

Octobermeterreadtime · 08/10/2023 21:18

Report the dog and illegal car business to the council.. Hire skip for cf car space.

BingBunnyBlues · 08/10/2023 21:20

Also my house was only one room wide with no hall so there was nowhere to hide from the hideous sounds of Piss Stream McTrombers. He also had a smoker's cough. I don't miss him.

WeeGoddess · 08/10/2023 21:20

Oh yeh, the coughing travels well! My daughter said to me last winter *Anne's cough is better now. Ha ha 😂 we never speak to Anne.

NoEffingWay · 08/10/2023 21:24

@Octobermeterreadtime I've hatched a plan to grab the cones when he next goes out and move them using my car. I did move them once behind the bins but he must have found them!

We are the middle terrace in a row of 3. To the left we have the loud guy who thinks nothing of having phone conversations on speaker at midnight in his back garden. That was fun in summer 🙄

To the right we have a single lady, she’s lovely and always takes in our parcels.
The only consolation of living next to loudmouth is in winter when they both have their heating on, I don’t have to use mine as their houses warm mine up!

Piss Stream McTrombers 🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you for the evening giggle, I needed that!

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/10/2023 21:29

I'm never buying another terraced house again. If I go insane it will be because of the stompy bastard nextdoor. At least the druggy neighbour is no more, there is only do much you can smoke before your lungs pack in.

Sharpkat · 08/10/2023 21:32

I must be super lucky. I live in an end of terrace. It is about 15 years old. Next door have a 3 year old and an 8 year old. The main bedroom where the baby was adjoins mine. Never ever heard a single sound and been here 4 years n

How does the OP know it's an illegal business?

RosesAndHellebores · 08/10/2023 21:33

I lived in a terrace years ago (mid 80s to early 90s). Loved it. V late Victorian so thick walls I guess. Never heard a sound from the neighbours who were lovely. Still friends. The parking was dreadful.

WeeGoddess · 08/10/2023 21:35

@LuckyCharm9 yes looking on the bright side I do realise this house is warmer than the one I grew up in.

Lol at hearing the neighbours go to the loo. I have heard that, sometimes, if it's the middle of the night and every thing else is quiet, yes i sometimes realise im hearing that!!

bonzaitree · 08/10/2023 21:36

Never lived in terrace but we’re in flats. New next door neighbours are chain smokers who also won’t smoke inside. So they’re constantly in and out in and out in and out of the house.

We counted 5 times in one hour this evo. Crashing around talking loudly each time. Why? Who knows.

Same here - we also live in an end of terrace house (ours was built in 1900 though). We never ever hear the neighbours, not even muffled sounds. It is kind of weird, but of course we're happy about it.

NoEffingWay · 08/10/2023 21:38

@sadaboutmycat I just think it's highly suspicious that they turn up with their cars with different wheels on, use power tools at 2am to fix the alloys in the middle of the road and then swap them over in the middle of the night.

This is unusual time keeping to say the least!

Sharpkat · 08/10/2023 21:39

@hotpotlover It is almost strange at times. I don't even know if they are home until I check their parking space. I moved here in December 2019 and soon realised that the lady next door was pregnant. Like a matter of days. I was so worried about the noise. Never heard a single cry.

I know the kids are not quiet ones! They play outside a lot which is absolutely fine, but I do appreciate the fact that I have never heard a sound. There is plenty wrong with this property (no heating) but it is the quietest place in the world and I say that as someone who grew up on a farm and the sheep were more troublesome.

BaronessBomburst · 08/10/2023 21:41

Small villages are the worst. The house next door but one to the church was recently seized by the authorities as it was an opium den.

agent765 · 08/10/2023 21:51

My friend lives in a mid-terrace. The day she moved in her DH put up sound-proofing. What a difference.

It's sad and annoying that people don't consider their neighbours.

Userer · 08/10/2023 21:51

I used to live in a long row of terraces which all had gardens but these then backed on to a mirror image row of terraces. The worst thing was the fireworks that someone set off every year the sound was so loud more like a massive explosion.

MrsBunTheBakersMum · 08/10/2023 21:56

I live in a very old mid terrace, I think the walls are made of tissues and hope, we’ve been here over a decade, on one side is an old guy who’s half deaf and apart from two big staffies who always bark at me in the garden as if they’ve never seen me before we have no problems with him, he’s quiet he doesn’t here us when we lose our shit at watch other sometimes, he’s always happy to take in a parcel and saves us a trip to the tip if we’ve got any scrap wood or old wooden furniture because he takes it all and burns it on his fire. Although we did once take a parcel for him which was in one of those grey plastic shipping bags and was clearly a dildo with a suction cup on the end! He claimed it was a dog toy when he came to collect it lol.
mother side has been a revolving door of different levels of crap.
first was a guy we rarely saw but knew he drank a lot and played loud dance music all night one day he put a sad song on full blast on repeat and after 11pm we knocked to ask him to turn it down and got no response so eventually called the police to do a welfare check and he was taken away in an ambulance never to return, I hope he was ok.
Then we had a young couple with a toddler who screamed in pain constantly due to a skin condition but the parents would scream really nasty things at him and it sounded like they were also hurting him so we had no choice but to report it and they moved out just after.
then came the ones growing weed in the attic and selling it from the front window, our whole house stank and our friend who happens to be a police officer sorted that out!
Then came a young couple who seemed fine but decided to fill the entire tiny garden with a paddling pool, lounged around in it in a tiny bikini for a few days then left it full to fester, it was green with algae and smelled like the swamps of degobah, they left after their landlord did a routine inspection and discovered they’d been there over a year and didn’t seem to have cleaned at all! The whole house was trashed and the bathroom And kitchen was so bad they just had to rip it all out.
young woman lives there now and it seems to have settled down after her ex gave up on smashing her windows every day and threatening to kill her. She got cctv.

hopefully moving soon to a detached bungalow and hopefully non crazy neighbours!

MrsBunTheBakersMum · 08/10/2023 21:57

We can hear everything through the walls, I can hear the person next door actually peeing which is disturbing.

NoEffingWay · 08/10/2023 22:00

I'm always really worried about being too loud, but beyond hoovering the carpets at 7pm I think we're okay!

I’m in a terraced house, built about 1900, and never hear the neighbours either side. Everyone is lovely and quiet.
