Subfertility and not using contraception

In 25 years of not using contraception I only got pregnant 4 times (one ended in mc). Big ish gaps between dc. I’m 40 now and last pregnancy was 4 years ago. Never breastfed and never used any contraception.

Nothing was ever found to be wrong with either of us so it was ‘unexplained infertility’

Met DP at 15, had first dc at 25. Second at 31, mc at 32 and then last dc at 36.

The gp I saw last week had suggested contraception but i just don’t think I need it ? I’m not very fertile at all and I’m 40 now ??!! Surely the chances are so low (and tbh if by some miracle I did get pregnant we would be happy) the gp was talking like it’s still likely but I’m sure it’s extremely unlikely !

I believe there’s an uptick in most women’s fertility just before menopause…and if you decide not to use contraception then the baby that might result is NOT an accident!

I was just surprised as I know fertility declines after 40 and mine is clearly not very good anyway ! But the gp was talking very seriously as if it was a genuine high risk of it happening but for me I really don’t think it is ! (Also I wish I knew what my issues are it’s always really puzzled me as every single test was always fine ??!)

Don't understand this thread tbh. If you want a baby, don't use contraception obviously. If you don't want one, then use contraception. Simple no?

I posted as I was surprised at the gp reaction - I thought fertility declines a lot at 40 and then was explaining how I’m not very fertile anyway so surely the chance is very low and not warranting such concern from the gp

Do you really want to chance it?

If you’re open to another baby, no problem.

But ‘low fertility’ is not the same as ‘infertile’. There is a chance, even if it’s small, that you’ll get pregnant.

I’m 46 and pretty sure my eggs are all useless at this point, but I’ll be using contraception until I am fully past menopause because I absolutely DO NOT want to get pregnant. It’s a no-brainer.

Oh definitely if I did get pregnant I’d be happy so there’s that element to it but I really don’t feel like it would happen? Maybe I’ve just had such difficult ttc issues and waits of years (10 years for my first) that I just can’t comprehend it happening at all if we aren’t actually trying ?
