Has anyone got this hideous cold doing the rounds?

Pyri · 08/10/2023 11:09

Usually a cold lasts a few days and gives me some sniffles and a headache

This one has been going on for 10 days and is much worse. Shivers, sneezes, sore throat, muscle aches, coughing etc. Not enough to be off work but enough to make me feel exhausted and want to be in bed by 8pm.

it’s not covid. Anyone else got it?

No the school won’t sack me because they don’t employ me. The council can and will as they are my employer, they have the same sickness policy as the private sector and as I only work part time I don’t get sick pay. I am in a union and I still don’t have a leg to stand on, I’ve been employed for less than 2 years.

so if I’m I’ll I’m going in. Luckily I clean after school hours and I can self isolate away from others. Yes it’s shit, I don’t agree with it but I need my job

The council won’t sack you either. There are very recognised unions you should be in who will protect you from this.

cardibach · 10/10/2023 11:39

Sorry, misread. You are in a union @blackheartsgirl
Even 8n the first two years they’ll struggle to sack you if you are off because you are genuinely ill.

And that is totally incorrect.

Dh came home Sunday off a flight and has been ill with a cold since. He says he can’t taste anything and feels dreadful. I’m worried he’ll give it to me as a cold really knocks me down massively and lasts me about a month (cough for 3 months). The only upside is I’m not at work, on maternity leave. Downside is baby to look after but also she might get it.

Bollocks.

The “genuineness” or otherwise of illness is not considered when employers apply attendance policies. They work on the basis that contracts specify “regular attendance” and if you’re off sick too often (according to their metrics) you’re considered to have breached that part of your contract.

You seem ill-informed on this subject so maybe dial back on telling people they’re safe from adverse consequences when that may well not be the case.

If you have all those symptoms, @Pyri , you should definitely be off work - not least because you’ve probably given it to loads of other people who will now feel just as awful (or worse) as you. It’s bloody selfish and this ridiculous presenteeism needs to stop!
people - stay home if you are unwell! We don’t all want your hideous germs.

I don't get sick pay . I work 3 jobs and I can't afford to be off . Unless someone else is willing to pay my bills for me then I will continue to go to work until i physically cant get out of bed.
I assume you can either WFH or you get sick pay .. good for you

Off sick too often and off with something that makes you feel like shit aren’t the same thing. I’m not saying people should be off for every little sniffle, but that they shouldn’t spread nasty germs that make them feel like shit about. I’m assuming people aren’t in this situation that often, based on my own experience with my health and that of my friends.
Jesus, I give up with some people on here. Why does ‘don’t spread a really nasty and one off virus by going to work - they can’t sack you for that’ get interpreted as ‘take time off every other week don’t worry you can’t get sacked for it’?

idrinkandiknowthings · 10/10/2023 14:07

Yup, me too!! My boss had it for two days then was right as rain. I'm currently on my 10th day. He's just come in whilst I was having a coughing fit and said, "Oh, you really are stuck with this cold aren't you??". Then proceeded to give me a list of things to do 😷

Because in the first two years you can get sacked for that (there's very little you can't be sacked for, discrimination excepted). You're spouting nonsense.

XenoBitch · 10/10/2023 20:18

I had what felt like a heavy cold for a day or two. Sore throat and a headache that would not shift.
Am just snotty now though. I feel like I am constantly blowing my nose.

ilovebagpuss · 10/10/2023 20:27

Yes nearly 3 weeks now and still coughing and wheezing, honestly I've had Covid 4 times due to work and none of them were this bad.
Genuinely been close to tears with how exhusting it's been.

Mrsgreen100 · 10/10/2023 20:29

Anyone out there with vertigo, and horrible muscle and bone aches , sinuses sore
but no sore throat , or other cold symptoms
beyond tired to

No. You can’t. Not for a few days once.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/10/2023 22:19

Yes, you bloody can. In the first two years, you've very very very limited employment rights. What makes you so confident in the rubbish you're spouting?

Pyri · 07/11/2023 08:33

Just one month later and it’s back again!! Anyone else feel like they keep getting bugs, it’s not even winter yet!
