When was the last time you wrote a cheque? Did you know it would be your last?

I honestly can't remember when it was, and no I didn't know it would be my last. I do remember paying for childcare by cheque over 20 years ago, so I suppose one of those was my last. It became so difficult with the nursery being unable to predict when they would pay the cheques in that I switched to cash.

A spelling lesson with year 7s, the words "check" and "cheque" came up, and the puzzlement and confusion around the room when I tried to explain 😂

It made me realise for the first time that I haven't written a cheque in decades, and don't even know when I last owned a cheque book, or what happened to it.

I bet there are Mumsnetters who have never written a cheque!

I use them occasionally, its been about a year though. A lot of my kids activities are cash only so if I am short I'll just write the cheque. My cat sitter always got paid by cheque.

I send family birthday cards by post and my kids help sending Christmas cards and have some pen pals they met on hols last year. When my youngest were little, I was a SAHM and the days were long.... we used to sometimes draw a picture and post it to ourselves. We would walk to the post office and buy a stamp and then wait eagerly for it to find its way back. Sometimes Granny or Aunts and Uncles got a random picture in the post, its actually a lovely activity for the kids.

Last week. Was a gift for a child and didn’t want to give cash and bank transfer isn’t the same as holding a cheque. Was the first for a long time though.

It doesn't save time for the person receiving the cheque though does it!

How long does it take open a banking app, take a photo of a cheque and hit submit?

Longer than it takes to receive it in to your bank account

I checked my cheque book just now and the last cheques I wrote (other than for gas boiler man) were for my son's sixth form college (in 2019) and for my mum's gift membership of the National Trust for Scotland Grin .

Potentially longer than using the machine in branch, if you are in town anyway.

However, this obviously depends on having the elusive bank branch somewhere convenient!
