When was the last time you wrote a cheque? Did you know it would be your last?

I honestly can't remember when it was, and no I didn't know it would be my last. I do remember paying for childcare by cheque over 20 years ago, so I suppose one of those was my last. It became so difficult with the nursery being unable to predict when they would pay the cheques in that I switched to cash.

A spelling lesson with year 7s, the words "check" and "cheque" came up, and the puzzlement and confusion around the room when I tried to explain 😂

It made me realise for the first time that I haven't written a cheque in decades, and don't even know when I last owned a cheque book, or what happened to it.

I bet there are Mumsnetters who have never written a cheque!

I did receive one recently tho form British Gas (£1.17 rebate) and I could just deposit it on my banking app by taking a photo. That is really good.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/10/2023 08:44

I used them fairly regularly prior to 2020 for school and Scouting. I also had to countersign Brownie cheques until then. GG rules & bank conditions meant that we couldn't access internet banking, debit cards and transfer out so there was a lot incurring personal cost and reimbursing by cheque.

People in their 20s I can understand not having encountered the kinds of organisations/ businesses that have clung on to cheques, but I'm surprised at people well into their 30s never having encountered them.

Literally yesterday.
Booking a B&B and the owner said to pay the deposit by cash or cheque only. Bit of a faff as we are not nearby!
Blew the dust off the cheque book and then had to post it to him.

Before that...years I'd say

Strawberryshortcake90 · 08/10/2023 08:57

I’ve written two cheques in the past week. One for DDs Brownies subs and one for my milkman who only takes cash or cheque.

A few weeks ago, to move some money to my husband's account. I'll be writing him another one shortly for some dental work he needs. I much prefer quickly writing a cheque to faffing around with security codes etc. online - takes half the time.

That’s incredible.

It literally takes about 20 seconds to open your app (face ID, nothing more) and ping the money across).

Does your husband then scan the cheque via his app or actually pay in in at the bank? It seems terribly old fashioned either way!

MissTrip82 · 08/10/2023 09:02

I’m 45 and have never written one!

I did bank them occasionally.

Floopyfloop · 08/10/2023 09:04

I use them weekly as I run a youth group and our bank does not allow cards. Everything is done by card! It’s a pain in the ass!

MartyFunkhouser · 08/10/2023 09:07

Believe it or not, up until recently, our milkman (who’s only about 50) could only be paid by cheque. We’d never had a milkman until about a year ago and then were 😮 at his payment choice as we had to scrabble through drawers to find an ancient cheque book.

He has now finally moved on to accept online transfers.

RampantIvy · 08/10/2023 09:09

I can't remember the last time I used cash either!

I used cash at a Macmillan coffee morning yesterday. They didn't have a card machine.

I think I last used a cheque book when we were still having milk deliveries about 10 years ago.

IHeartGeneHunt · 08/10/2023 09:14

2009 I think, deposit for the bedsit I was renting.

I no longer have a branch if my bank locally to pay it in.

I just take a photo of them using a banking app. I don’t need to leave the house.

Thanks . As I don't get cheques very often I didn't realise this - will definitely do this if I get another one .

Hmmm, yes, because I'd be so happy to hand my biometric data over to the owners of some app! Not.

Mum2aTeen · 08/10/2023 10:18

Never I'm 36, and yeah, I've never written one. I have held one from the bank to buy a car, but I never wrote on it. I just held onto it.
I don't even remember my mum or grandparents use them.

Crabwoman · 08/10/2023 10:36

I paid an initial fee of £250 for something to my very old school conveyancing solicitor about 7 years ago when I first bought our house. They asked for it in cheque, but all other payments thereafter were in BACS?!

Que urgent search through cupboards for dusty old cheque book and took me a minute to remember how to write it.

I'm 40. I think I've only written about 4 in my life.

Squirrelsnut · 08/10/2023 10:38

6 weeks ago, on behalf of my 93 yo dad.

shoeawsome · 08/10/2023 10:59

DVLA for a name change & new licence - figure that! Had to hunt down my cheque book!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/10/2023 11:02

I still write the occasional one for the frozen fish man who comes to the door, but that’s only every few months. He doesn’t have a card machine. But I always have to hunt for a cheque book - it’s never where I think it is.

Krustykrabpizza · 08/10/2023 11:07

Nearly 50. I do use online banking, but it's quicker to write a cheque than: get out laptop, boot up laptop, put in password, put in one-time code they send to my phone, type in amount I want to pay, answer online questions to screen possible scams, close down laptop, put laptop away again.

Compared to scrawling in the appropriate places: "Mr RaeHitsEbSire" "One hundred pounds only" "£100.00" "7.10.2023" "RaehitsEbSire" which takes about 60 seconds, it's a no-brainer to save time.

It doesn't save time for the person receiving the cheque though does it!

The person receiving the cheque is getting my money! It's for them to decide whether the time investment is worth it.

Strawberrywalnutcake · 08/10/2023 11:33

Last year for our piano tuner.

How does he pay it into his account? Surely that takes time and is a faff for him?

Not really. He goes past his bank several times a week, so he only has to go in and use the cheque deposit machine.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 08/10/2023 11:40

Definitely! I shall be writing a birthday cheque today. I like writing cheques for the young 'uns - keeping them in touch with recent history 😁

How long does it take open a banking app, take a photo of a cheque and hit submit?
