Mastitis Help

Hello, I am 2.5 weeks postpartum and have had mastitis for first time ever. Didn’t realise how awful it is!! On flucloxaccillin for 7 days. Is that long enough? Sooo scared of if coming back. I am feeling bit better today, 72hours into antibiotics. Breast is less red and lumpy, still have a bad headache and baby’s tummy upset from them 😭
Should I be on a 10 day course? I hate taking them but I absolutely do not want this to come back!!
any other tips to stop it reoccurring?
I’ve breastfed 2 children for 18 months each and never had this issue before! Don’t know what has happened this time and I’m scared if might ruin breastfeeding which is really important to me.
thank you
Chris xx

I’m sorry your not well. I’ve only had 7 day courses. Just keep feeding. If your boob is lump try a warm compress before feeding and massage from the nipple towards the lump while feeding. Make sure your bra isn’t too tight.

Mastitis is just the WORST. I’m so sorry you got it! I also was fine with a 7 day fluclox course. Could your baby have a tongue tie and not drain the boob properly? That was our issue. As PP said, use warm compress to get milk going when feeding. I used to start it off manually expressing over the sink if it was too full. Then afterwards use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If you start feeling worse call your HV or an all day number as you must be alert to developing sepsis.

Thank you! Baby has been checked and latch is good as far as I know. Doesn’t hurt or anything. I think it came on after I wore a sling so wonder if I had squashed my boob in too tightly. Just so scared of it coming back and having to start all over again! Babies poo is awful today, poor little thing

Hey

I'm so sorry about your mastitis. It's horrendous. I had it multiple times during the 18m I breadfed.

Have you tried dangle feeding? It really elevates the pain and someone here recommended when I was suffering and it really really helped.

You just put the baby on the and sort of hang your boob above and let them feed on your all four. I promise its a thing and I'm not a troll.

Hope you feel better very soon.

Xx

Call 111 you should be feeling a lot better than you are 72 hours in.

Sorry I am feeling lots better other than a headache that won’t go unless I keep on the pain killers!
