Food you used to hate but now love?

For me it’s marzipan.

Things took a turn last year when I was brought back some from the Czech Republic.
Now I can’t get enough of the stuff. Obviously not from the CR sadly, but Aldi’s choceur marzipan bar with rum and raisin is my kryptonite.
Seriously I need help 😂 I’m 100% blaming menopause!

I love anything rum and raisin. I have a vivid memory of planting radish as a kid and then being disappointed by how horrible they were when I got to taste them. Now I love the stuff!

buonnatale · 07/10/2023 09:44

Olives. Mayonnaise.

Frankinbeans · 07/10/2023 10:31

Cinnamon. Amazing with apples.

Olives and fish. I loathed fish until I met DH when I was 29. Bizarrely, the first time he came to dinner I grilled some trout - first time I'd eaten fish since being forced to in childhood. No idea why I chose it. Loved it and have eaten it ever since.

TheChosenTwo · 07/10/2023 10:40

Another one saying olives! I still feel so mad with my younger, non olive loving me, thinking of all those wasted years 😂

TroysMammy · 07/10/2023 10:47

Yogurt. When I was a child I would have to wait for my frozen mousse to defrost whilst my sister would be tucking into her pot of Ski.

Badaba · 07/10/2023 10:49

Oxtail.

Bobje · 07/10/2023 10:59

I love olives! Although I can’t actually remember when I started loving them. But also cannot remember ever disliking them. Hmmm… so I guess I just loved them from the off!

@TotalOverhaul My DC very recently (this summer!) converted one of their friends into liking fish! They went to the seaside as a birthday treat. DC chose scampi and chips for lunch, the others went for burgers/hotdogs.
DC friend’s mum very cannily asked if her have-always-hated-fish child could try some of DC’s scampi and it was an instant hit - has asked for it often ever since apparently. So peer pressure is absolutely a thing at age 10.

@TheChosenTwo your rant at your younger self made me laugh 😂

I also used to hate butter, or anything dairy really. But now in true MN form, I love “good” butter with a “nice” bread 😉

Tomatoes. Mayonnaise. Strawberries.

Pumpernickles · 07/10/2023 11:26

I spent many years hating added flavours with my food. It had to be as bland as possible. Now I love adding seasoning.

Crumpleton · 07/10/2023 11:59

Stilton...
On crackers, crusty bread, a pouring sauce for steak, little nuggets of it servered with pear and walnuts in a salad of watercress/salad leaves or in a Stilton and broccoli soup...to me it's yummy

OooPourUsACupLove · 07/10/2023 13:53

Fresh coriander. I lived in one of the big balti areas when I was younger and had to remember to ask for no coriander or I'd really not enjoy it.

Now I love the stuff. I buy handfuls of it for curries and salad and eat it in Vietnamese food at least weekly.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 07/10/2023 13:54

Olives here too

bloody love them

theduchessofspork · 07/10/2023 13:55

Peanut butter weirdly

But only the sugar free kind

OooPourUsACupLove · 07/10/2023 13:56

Oh - beer as well. Didn't used to like it at all, always wine, cider or cocktails. But I got into a sport/hobby and started to see the attraction of having a refreshing lager at the end of the day, and then tried some IPAs with the craft beer trend, and now I love an old man pint of London Pride 😁

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/10/2023 13:57

Cabbage. It was was a hated food that blighted my childhood. Now I eat it at least 4 times a week.

Gymmum82 · 07/10/2023 14:00

Olives and cheese

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/10/2023 14:04

Cabbage. I grew up with 1960s school meals and after that traumatising experience I didn't eat it for decades. Then a couple of years ago during a visit to Derby a mate and I went for lunch to a little cafe and I had braised steak with cabbage. How they cooked it I don't know but I was shovelling it in.

Now one of my preferred vegetables.

now I love an old man pint of London Pride

I live not far from the brewery (and temped there years ago). Love the stuff.

Globules · 07/10/2023 14:06

Step dad used to eat all manner of shellfish and strong flavours. I thought it was grim.

I'm now in love with Stilton, Cockles, Whelks and a whole host of other stuff 10 year old me would vomit at.

SM4713 · 07/10/2023 14:10

OP- strangely its marzipan for me too! I love almonds, but its the synthetic almond flavouring I can't stand. In Spain I tried some 'proper' marzipan that didn't have the flavouring and it was delicious.

Hot chillies. As a teen, even a mild salsa was too spicy for me. I gradually built up my tolerance and spent a great deal of time in Thailand. I can now eat raw chillies on food and my favourite condiment is Prik Nam Pla 😋

Cannas · 07/10/2023 14:12

Sauerkraut and kimchi. I loathed them with a passion but have had antibiotics and gastric issues and they are very good for the gut.
So I made myself have a dollop every day with my lunchtime salad. It took a while, months actually, but I can now honestly say I love it and miss it if I don't have any.

minipie · 07/10/2023 14:14

Onions. As a child I didn’t like anything with onions in at all (helpful!) later could tolerate that but would pick out any visible onion chunks, then cooked onion was fine but not raw red or spring onion.. now I like it all.

I’m still working on olives. Not grown up yet.

Cazzovuoi · 07/10/2023 14:18

Onions for me too!

Also broccoli. Mum used to serve it either raw or mush. Now I soften it and then sauté it in butter with garlic, chilli flakes and sprinkle with Pecorino Romano.

I eat it mainly with bacon and eggs as it is my favourite way to have it. Broccoli and eggs are made for each other!!

HushHushBaby · 07/10/2023 14:21

Olives definitely. I remember how even the smell of them was repulsive for me and now they just taste delicious.

Allschoolsareartschools · 07/10/2023 14:35

I hated marmite & really like it now. My friend used to have it on toast & it always smelt nice so I tried some & liked it.
I didn't like real butter as a child but now I like it far too much!
