Dying red hair

So DD is turning 18 and has asked to go somewhere good (probably in London as it’s our nearest city) to get highlights or a bayalage. She has beautiful waist length red hair (more auburn than anything I suppose) and she’s always loved it but says she wants to try something different.

We’ve had a look at some photos and not really seen anything particularly inspiring and it blonde hair on red doesn’t seem to look great but she really wants it done. Has anyone had their red hair coloured if so what would you suggest and also where would you suggest to get it done? As it’s her 18th I don’t mind spending a bit more to take her somewhere good.

thank you

I’m a fellow red head however I’m more of a strawberry blonde shade but I do currently have blonde highlights put through my hair
i have a ‘money piece’ which is the 2 front sections died mostly blonde (the trick with the front is super fine highlights rather than a block bleach strand)
I then have a couple of foils around my face and through the back so that when I tie my hair up my hair looks quite blonde but when down the red is definitely the main focus with blonde peeking through
i also don’t have any toner put on the bleach so the blonde pieces are a bright blonde rather than ashy which is where the contrast doesn’t always look great
I go to a salon outside of London but happy to share where, as always I think my hairdresser is a miracle worker!

Thank you, that would be amazing.

I would consider maintenance. I have waist length hair and when I used to get a full head of highlights it was 4-5 hours and a few hundred pounds. I'd make sure it's something that doesn't need constant redoing otherwise it's far too much work and money

That's a good point. I'm trying to persuade her to go redder but she really wants some blonde.

DD1 is a pure redhead with natural gold strands through her hair (and almost white eyebrows and lashes), so I think she would look stunning with similar warm blonde (never cool toned) if she's similar colouring.

DD tried a darker red once and it just looked flat and muddy compared to her natural colour. Brown or pure blonde just wouldn't suit her and hairdressers actually refused to even consider it, as they were sure it would look awful and ruin her hair condition due to its natural texture (wavy, almost ringlets in places). So she spent her teenaged Goth years wearing beanies instead of trying semi perm black like all of her friends. 😂

Yes, I'm hoping if we go somewhere good then they'll give us some good advice on colouring.
