Amazon parcel arrived, apparently already opened and resealed

Hi all. Starting this thread because I'm a bit weirded out by this situation.

A couple of days ago I ordered a small bottle of medicine from Amazon. Nobody was home when it arrived, but the delivery message said it had been 'handed to the resident'. It obviously couldn't have been. When I got home yesterday evening, it wasn't there. Then today there was a knock on the door - the neighbour brought it over. Except, the package had been opened, the contents taken out, and the package roughly sellotaped up again. He says he found it like that. Has anyone else experienced this from Amazon? I'm spooked by the possibilities:

a) Someone stole it in transit and taped it back up.
b) Someone broke into it on the doorstep, taped it back up and left it.
c) My friendly neighbour nicked it and is playing mind games.

I order loads of stuff from Amazon, and the only thing that came close was a large item that had obviously been packaged up when it was already broken.

You've listed the possibilities so what can any of us tell you that you don't already think?

I guess I'm asking if anyone else has ever received a parcel from Amazon that has been broken into and resealed. Does it happen a lot?

I had three weeks where all my parcels only from Amazon arrived completely open. Some delivered by royal mail and some from DPD. Didn't happen at this end. Just ripped open, not a clean cut. Freaked me out no end. Customer service absolutely no help so none the wiser.

I accidentally opened my neighbour's Amazon parcel (didn't check the label and was expecting something myself). Took it next door with an apology. No harm done. If your medication is still sealed I wouldn't worry about it.

SongofBernadette · 06/10/2023 19:20

P.S there should be a delivery photo

That's awful. Some crook at the depot it sounds like.

Last year I ordered a piece of furniture for nearly £200, and that arrived with a leg snapped clean off and neatly wrapped inside it. Obviously damaged before it was packaged up. That was a nightmare to return.

The medication is gone. It was a box within a box. Someone has opened both boxes, taken the medication out, and resealed it.

Edited to say: no delivery photo. Nothing apart from 'handed to resident', which was not true!

We had three parcels delivered this week. Courier handed them over and I accepted them, not knowing what was in them as they were for DH. One was completely flat and when opened the envelope was empty. It hadn't been opened via the perforated seal thingy, but one end had been prised opened and resealed. The vendor on Amazon has been useless as the courier had reported it as handed to resident. Fortunately it wasn't a high value item.

So I'm not alone. It does sound like things are sometimes stolen during delivery. I'm really hoping it wasn't my nice neighbour. 😅

Mine was delivered to a neighbours house they kept it amazon replaced it

I opened my other neighbours the once looked at it and thought.....rabbit food? Realised it was hers and took it around

SongofBernadette · 06/10/2023 19:34

Oh mine always say "Handed to the resident" when they're not. Who was the delivery company? They normally have their own logo tape but saying that neither companies taped my opened parcels up the other week.
Claim back from Amazon, I've just claimed for a refund online without speaking to anyone and it was refunded straight away (to gift card)
I mean logically you wouldn't think it was worth your neighbour stealing medication but people are weird.

NotTerfNorCis · 06/10/2023 19:38

I think I've sorted a refund from Amazon, although it took a bit of doing because they said at first it was 'non-refundable' and I should take it up with the seller - who of course denied all responsibility.

It was 'Delivery by Amazon'. They definitely have form for dumping stuff on the door step, knocking, jumping back in the van and marking it down as 'handed to resident'.

DS ordered a PS5 last week. Gave the code to the driver who sped off like his wheels were on fire. Opened it and it was an empty box with very heavy wrapping.

Amazon sent a replacement but the only thing that was unusual was it had plain sellotape on not the Amazon tape.

MargaretThursday · 06/10/2023 20:15

We had a phase of Amazon parcels going missing on the doorstep. Then one day a parcel arrived about a week late, and when I picked it up was clearly opened.
After that we had no problems.

Thing was that particular parcel had two very boring maths books in with no retail value whatsoever.
I suspected the person who was pinching them realised we didn't order high value things from Amazon and gave up at that point.

TreesAtSea · 06/10/2023 20:36

Apparently it's quite common for (not just) Amazon parcels to be opened in transit, presumably by dodgy couriers, contents stolen and the package then resealed with low-value items of the same weight put inside. There was a news story on the BBC some months ago, featuring people who'd ordered caneras, laptops etc, and had this happen, receiving any old stiff instead.

I only order books and DVDs form Amazon. I've had plenty of badly packed items where the package has been too big and the tape loose, so basically the items could've fallen out but luckily hadn't.

The only more suspicious occasion was a package containing a book of a certain size that arrived with the Amazon tape cut clean through, which I doubt was accidental. Imagine the culprit's disappointment when they found it was a book instead of a laptop....

All these parcels were handed to me in person, not left outside or with anyone else.

NotTerfNorCis · 06/10/2023 21:32

I was starting to wonder if it all burst open at the depot, a fork lift truck accident or something, but my OH thinks it was definitely forced. :(

I ordered something that had an age restriction flag for the driver and it had obviously been torn open to see what it was. They must have been disappointed by my £2 pack of razor blades as they were still in there Hmm

TreesAtSea · 07/10/2023 00:09

Oh lord, my previous post really shouldn't have read, "receiving any old stiff instead". I'd be mighty surprised if one of them turned up in an Amazon package.....
