Cyclists cycle lane distance?

I am an anxious driver when it comes to cyclists etc I’m very careful around them! ( sometimes maybe too careful!) I always leave plenty of space and wait for safe gaps to go on other side of road to overtake. I always leave at least 1.5m going around them!

im wondering about cycle lanes though ( a decent size one not the tiny pointless ones)
was driving here today and had a cyclist in this cycle lane slight uphill in a 30mph so he was going a lot slower than me!
There was an island just before this bit so I waited until passing the island to go past him so I could move over right more.

my question I guess is, if they are cycling in a cycle lane and it’s a decent size road would you continue in your lane and drive normally past ( slowing down and moving over right slightly but staying in your own lane still )

That's a narrow and unsegregated lane, so I would continue to give them 1.5m clearance.

You should give a cyclist the same passing clearance as you would a car.

I would want to be on the other side of the road to pass a cyclist in a narrow lane like that. Doesn’t mean I don’t sigh when I meet a troop of them that will take until doomsday to pass but I’m the one safe in my car so I give them lots of space!

Yss exactly, it's not a segregated lane so treat as if they were on the main carriageway. A lot of cyclists hate the painted lanes as the surface is usually awful and all the crap like broken glass collects in them so they're prone to moving out of them. Thank you for giving them space.

I think it looks narrower in the photo that it is! There’s a whole normal lane to drive on and then I would say that cycle lane was maybe around 1m wide? ( not the best at measurements but at a guess ) and I positioned my car right up to the centre line/ wheels on the centre line!

so I would say that was definitely giving the width of a car/1.5 m? I was just anxious about it after with knowing what the distance is with a cycle lane!

thank you though

Give them space. There’s often potholes or drains , and if you’re too close and they come off, you’d never forgive yourself even if it was a total accident. It’s really not going to add much on to your journey. Wide berth.

We have a similar road here and I tend to give plenty of room and use the full road to overtake when there’s a gap.
