Does anyone else currently have this horrible lingering cough-like virus?

It’s been over a week now and getting on my frigging nerves as no sign of abating.

Started off as a mild tickle cough and very slight sniffles last week. This lingered for days and days then about 2 days ago it turned into a really dry, thickly yet chesty barking cough.

I still only have slight sniffles and no sneezing at all and I don’t feel particularly unwell (not like when I’ve had Covid or the flu) but am absolutely exhausted. I fell asleep on the sofa yesterday afternoon which is not like me.

The biggest piss off is that ds and dd have it too and it was ds’s 18th last weekend and we have had to move the celebrations to this Saturday as he felt rough but now it looks like we may have to postpone it again!

I have done a few Covid tests, they are negative so it’s obviously some virus thing doing the rounds.

Anyone else have it? How long did it last?

I have the same thing. Saturday I had a slight tickle, Sunday the tickle got worse with some coughs, Sunday evening more coughs but not dry or persistent. My ears were blocked too. Monday night my throat was really sore, but was fine by Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday my nose had started running and getting blocked as well as my ears. Friday and I still have the odd cough and my nose is less blocked. Hopefully it’ll disappear over the weekend.

I did a Covid test on Tuesday and no Covid, so just a cold.

I'm almost 4 weeks in, dog tired, but only coughing in the mornings, but getting breathless at times.
Had a course of anti bs, which didn't help.
Hope you feel better soon!

Should have said that I was coughing almost constantly for two weeks, now just the mornings.

Yep, into 3rd week!

Andnowshesatoddler · 06/10/2023 10:01

Yes, it's also given me a awful sore throat too from all my barking.

leavemealonelisa · 06/10/2023 10:02

Me! I've had it about 3 weeks now. Finally seems to be getting a little better. I got antibiotics after 2 weeks or so but might need to get some more as it hasn't cleared. It's awful!

Iamlikesorry · 06/10/2023 10:23

I'm into my fourth week, usually I get a really stuffy head but this time, just a very sore throat, plus chesty cough which hasn't gone away.

loveulotslikejellytots · 06/10/2023 10:39

Yep, in my 4th week now. I finally went to the doctors last week but they said it didn't need antibiotics. The worst part is my ears are congested along with my sinuses and it's getting quite painful.

Medlady · 06/10/2023 10:44

It’s the tiredness! I don’t feel very u well, slightly sore throat and slightly runny nose, but I just want to sleeeep

vivainsomnia · 06/10/2023 10:54

Had exactly the same. Tested negative. Tested one week later again as a cold would normally have got better by then. Two bright lines!

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 06/10/2023 10:58

No-one knows the false negative rate of LFTs against the new variants.

Also lots of reports that tests only become positive several days in to symptoms.

There's been a big increase in the amount of covid around at the moment (it's making a lot of people really poorly for a week or more, and then taking another week or more to clear) so it is quite possible that it is all covid.

Picklemeyellow · 06/10/2023 11:13

As I run my own home help business and also care for my mum I have tested several times, one last week and two this week (one last night) but they’ve all been negative but maybe as you say UnmentionedElephantDildo, the new variants aren’t showing up on the tests?

It’s a shit virus, whatever it is, mainly because of the amount of time it’s taking people to shift.

Yep. Nearly three weeks now.
2 negative covid tests.

Started with a fever and 12 hour sleep but it's just been coughing for ages now.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/10/2023 11:38

DH and I had something like this earlier this summer. Definitely not covid (we both had that for the first time a month or so ago). DH reckons it might have been RSV, Respiratory syncytial virus, (iirc) - said there was a lot of it around.

It took a few weeks and a lot of throat sweets to quash.

Lalalanothingtoseehere · 06/10/2023 11:52

I caught it 8 weeks ago while I was in A&E with my elderly parent (the only time we were near strangers the whole week). It's not covid, my parent got PCR'd by the hospital - they got admitted for something else and then the virus kicked in. They needed prescription drugs and drips, I just felt rough for two weeks and coughed for another 4. (I wore a proper FFP mask in the hospital and used hand gell all the time to avoid giving it to other poorly people, obvs).
